Obama puts the heat on Republicans? That is a truly stupid move on his part. The people are waking up to the facts of this spending bill. He will make himself the target of their ire along with Pelosi. Looks like he will miss his opportunity to become the great unifier.

Why don’t any of these reporters ever ask themselves why Obama needs the Republicans? Democrats can pass this bill.

“The truth is Obama doesn’t have the Democrat votes to pass this either.”

I hope the RINO’s in the Senate realize this. Maybe they will actually help us out for once. RINO’s just stick their fingers in the wind to see which way it’s blowing and follow the majority, as we know. Godspeed to Sanford and DeMint!

They better not cave. They’ve caved enough over the last 8 years.

I guess President Obama figured he could save the day with more of his eloquence, just in written form. The item that struck me was his insistence on urgency. As you say, it is real "sky is falling" rhetoric. So my question is: why don't they just pass it? No one in the media seems to question why they don't just pass it on a party line vote, if they have the votes.

If what President Obama says is accurate, then he is frittering away time, because, as he says, "[E]ach day we wait to begin the work of turning our economy around, more people lose their jobs, their savings and their homes." So how many days will he waste before making his party vote on it? Is he really letting "more people lose their jobs, their savings and their homes" so he can pursue some mythical dream of unity? Seems to me a real leader would be willing to forge ahead with or without the opposition. Yet President Obama is willing to let people lose everything so he can massage his ego as the great unifier.

I think the plan is a disaster and fervently hope it fails. It really angers me, though, to see President Obama trying to drag the Republican party down with him on this scheme. If it is so great, why don't they just pass it? Because they don't want the blame for a failure. Sad to think that President Obama is willing to (in his rhetoric) let Americans lose everything in order for him to preen himself as he who is above politics. Talk about putting politics ahead of leadership.

Democrats control the House of Representatives, the United States Senate, the Whitehouse.

And they STILL want to blame Repubicans?

President Obama needs a crash course on ‘Leadership’ folks.

Messiahs don’t need to lead, just be “present” so their aura can radiate to the masses.

Obama is right about one thing: tax cuts alone don't work (but neither does massive spending); however, tax cuts AND spending and government cuts combined have and do work.

What he is ignoring is that 47% did not vote for him, and I'll bet that most of the people who did vote for him do NOT want more spending, more government growth and more taxes.

People did not vote for the end of fiscal conservatism and the loss of liberty.

I’m afraid it’s all “our” Republicans know how to do. They forfeited backbones years ago.

You are right, the Republicans aren’t “too bright”.

...”Not a single Republican voted for the measure last week in the House, and even some moderate Democrats in the Senate have expressed discomfort over the escalating cost.”...

Of course, the LA times will not say that 11 democrats “expressed discomfort” by voting against the bill with the GOP. I’ve yet to read in any MSM piece about the 11 democrat “defectors”.

You wish mr Nicholas..... Obama is a weakling with no power against the Republicans. He can’t even control his own.

He would not know “whole meal” if it struck him in the face. All he knows is Ci-cago pork.

In this case, hopefully the “half-steps” will avail us (the taxpayer) nothing (no bill).

Every Republican should just vote “Present” and leave it at that.

He says the 'half steps' now urged by the GOP for the stimulus bill are the same ideas that led to the financial crisis.

Nope, the Congress, led by Demcorats pushing for easier mortgages for people who probably should never bought a house, brought this about. Contributing also was the profligate spending by BOTH Republicans and Democrats from 2000 to 2006. THAT'S why so many Repubs. lost their seats in 2004, then again in 2006. Republican voters, especially conservatives, saw no need to return them to Congress, if they were going to spend like Democrats.
