WASHINGTON (AP) - Republicans tried to push back against the ballooning size of President Barack Obama's economic recovery plan Wednesday, even as he warned that the financial crisis will turn into "a catastrophe" if the bill isn't passed quickly. Obama summoned centrist senators to the White House Wednesday afternoon to discuss a plan to cut more than $50 billion in spending from the measure, which breached the $900 billion barrier in the Senate on Tuesday and appears headed higher.
Republican Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine, as well as Ben Nelson, D-Neb., have tentatively agreed to cutting more than $50 billion from the bill, a Nelson spokesman said, though details weren't yet available.
Their effort is central to building at least some bipartisan support for the bill, which has come under increasing attack for too much spending unrelated to jolting the economy right away.
Obama indicated he's amenable to changes.
"No plan is perfect, and we should work to make it stronger," Obama said at the White House Wednesday. "Let's not make the perfect the enemy of the essential. Let's show people all over our country who are looking for leadership in this difficult time that we are equal to the task."
The cost of the plan expanded past $900 billion after the Senate on Tuesday added money for medical research and tax breaks for car purchases. An effort to add $25 billion more for infrastructure projectswhich narrowly failed to advanceis likely to be revived.
The cost could go higher Wednesday if a tax break for homebuyers is made more generous.

Have you ever seen so many news conferences? I’m really sick of his diarrhea of the mouth.
If the "stimulus" bill were really necessary and were it really a stimulus, it would not contain so much pork that the Muslim Congresscritter from Minneapolis won't touch it.
Exactly. Impeachment proceedings should start immediately.
We’ve hard times without stimulating the pork, just do it.
We’ll have harder times with this stimulation, welcome to a 1930 similar era.
I have nothing to offer but fear itself! We need to do this by Friday. This crap is starting to sound like deja vu’ all over again.
Ditto
It already came.

Indeed.
Now, more than ever. We need to see his birth certificate. I'm not sure we can wait four years!!!
That is such a crock aka 'a Pelosi'.....there is no crisis other than government meddling in the market and stealing from Freddie Mac & Fanny Mae over the years....this is a media driven crisis with the exception of Detroit...they did that to themselves with union demands.
No to Obama's Stimulus Bill! It is not necessary.....the congress is corrupt, what else could anyone believe of them? Selling bad mortgage bundles to corrupt and uncaring people in the banking bushiness' around the world and they want the citizens of America to bail them out? Hell No.....and we have men who are tax cheats in charge of the mess now.....Good Lord how stupid have the voting public been/are? Pretty dumb. I can't afford this type of government, can you? Obama is not the man for the job after all.
Normal M.O. everything is a crisis which must have action now. Why is there always a crisis with these people? In theory they should have some idea of what they are doing.
Pelosi says we’re losing 500 million jobs a month. If that’s not ‘series’, I don’t know what is!! The media doesn’t care what these people say any more-it’s all just gospel.
Make the lie so big that coming back on your position and meeting sanity halfway makes you appear reasonable to disinterested people. They keep raising the number so they can go back to the original plan.
Obambi is not even ready to be an elected official on a county water board much less POTUS.
For once I agree with the loon.
Disaster will indeed happen if congress doesn’t act - to impeach the most clueless idiot ever to inhabit the office.
Well, the price of cars is about to go up.
The catastrophe is sitting in the Whitehouse just looking for the chance to happen
