LOS ANGELES, February 2, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Actor Gary Graham knew that by writing about his personal experience and rejection of abortion, he would be incurring the ire of not a few among the Hollywood elite.
Yet a blog column posted last Tuesday by the seasoned actor, known most recently for his roles as Ambassador Soval in the TV series "Star Trek: Enterprise" and Capt. Ingles on "J.A.G.", took an unflinching look at truths almost entirely ignored by those in the Hollywood establishment.
"Im going to say what millions know in the front of their brains, and many, many more millions know in the depths of their hearts but wont allow themselves to think it, much less feel it," wrote Graham. "And believe me, I know Ill be hated for saying it, Ill be hated by people who dont know me, have never worked with me, have never golfed with me, had a drink with me.
"Im going to say it anyway: Abortion is murder."
Graham described the irresponsibility of his youth that made abortion the convenient option for a drug-fueled, free-love lifestyle. He confessed to having paid for multiple abortions for girlfriends, observing that abortion sure took the pressure off of me, a guy, interested in sex who had been raised in the era of, Hey, you get a girl pregnant, you marry her! But then, he says, a "spiritual awakening" brought him to a "tearful epiphany of what it meant for a man to be with a woman, what sex was really designed for by our Creator and what abortion is.
"I truly wish that I had had this conviction way back when when I was only concerned about my selfish convenience of the day," wrote Graham. "But I didnt want to know, I didnt want to think about it. It was inconvenient to think about it."
He noted that the widespread acceptance of abortion "says volumes of how our entire culture has been coarsened," and "How life itself has been cheapened.
"We are told to have sex any time we feel the urge. Condoms are handed out in grade schools. Promiscuity is not only condoned, its tacitly encouraged ... But if you should get pregnant and its just not a convenient time for you, dont worry, there are Family Planning Services. ... That inconvenient fetus can be surgically ripped from its uterine moorings, ground up and tossed into the trash like so much garbage.
"Problem solved, and the mother can resume her egocentric lifestyle. But the scars on that womans soul will never quite heal. Im a man, but Ive got them on mine."
Responding to those who call for abortion to be "legal but rare," Graham asked, "Why rare?
"Whats wrong with abortion, that you think it should be a rare occurrence? Ive had moles removed from my skin. Doctors dont tell us that a mole removal should be rare. So whats with this rare business? Or is it a tacit agreement that abortion is plain wrong?
"Try this exercise: Every time you hear someone use the phrase ' a womans right to choose ' mentally complete the phrase with the following words ' to kill her baby.' Thats what the arguments about. A womans right to kill her baby."

Thanks, though I must admit that I have never been a Star Trek fan.
Prayers that God protect him and give him every opportunity to speak out boldly on this issue. May God’s hand be evident to all, as he gives his testimony, blessing him wherever he goes and reaching the hearts of many.
Excellent. You and Gandu have so far been the only two people to explain to me a condition that would pose a threat to the life of the mother. In all of the conversations I’ve had with pro-choice/abortion types, none have ever identified that condition.
The difference is we still had Conservatives serving in Congress, we still had a population of reasonable people, and people, all people, we’re starving for true leadership.
I’m not saying it’s impossible, but it is highly unlikely.
I would rather a fracture than an alliance with gay rights/marriage/abortion/illegals/socialists.
But hey, that’s just me.
Hopefully this man will see future success in Hollywierd despite his morally right stance on murdering babies.
I think the only other Conservative Republican in the 1980 GOP Primary was Illinois Congressman Phil Crane, but he was hardly a household name, so his utility in enhancing the GOP ticket was doubtful to the party faithful.
Your point about the selection of Jerry Ford to the ticket in 1980 is very interesting and thought provoking. I agree that Ford would probably have been a one term VP, and thus would have paved the way for Reagan’s ability to tap a real Conservative to round out his ticket in 1984.
Who do you think Reagan would have invited to share the 1984 ticket, assuming Ford had been the sitting VP up till 1984, and had bowed out after the first term?
Great post. I recommend to everyone to read his entire blog piece.
My first and probably only choice would have to be Jeane Kirkpatrick.
I agree, it was an incredibly powerful piece.
Good for this man.
Here’s my message for him:
And, sorry, Mr. Graham, but you deserve to take the grief for your earlier actions and this is a small way to pay for it. I hope you continue to tell the truth.
I hope that you will use your acting talent, time and money to help spread the word while going out of his way to support the organizations working to make fewer women and girls feel pressured into believing they have no “choice.”
I wore this button at CPAC 1988, and Bob Dole came up to me and told me I wouldn't be wearing that (button) much longer.
Actually, it’s not true that the baby is usually dead when discovered in ectopics. It is true that they are almost certain to die and are a direct, imminent and life-threatening danger to their mothers. The problem is that they continue to grow or have already grown beyond the size of the fallopian tube.
Where the embryonic human is alive we use the doctrine of unintended consequences or “double effect” to determine the right thing to do.
It’s ethical to remove the diseased tube from the body without the intention to or directly causing the death of the baby. It’s not ethical to cause the death of the child with medicines (methotrexate or RU486) or by scooping the embryo out of the tube while alive, each of which directly causes the death of the child.
In one of those demonstration that the right thing to do is *actually* the right thing to do - women are more likely to have successful pregnancies in the future if the more ethical procedure to remove the diseased tube.
Having Jack Kemp as his running mate was one of the few things that Dole ever got right. I think Dole deserves a lot of the blame for the current state of the GOP.
Thanks for the clarification. I thought that most ectopic babies were already dead at the time of discovery.
Why do I care what a B-list actor thinks? It either is immoral or not, regardless of what someone who pretends for a living thinks.
Sadly, no. It’s heart breaking for a woman (and for those of us who take care of her).
