Michael Steele, the new chairman of the Republican National Committee wants the GOP to reach out to candidates who support gay marriage and are pro-choice. Steele told Fox's Chris Wallace that it was "important" to reach out to those voters.
WALLACE: You are one of the co-founders of something called the Republican Leadership Council which supports candidates who favor abortion and gay rights.
STEELE: Yes.
(watch video)
WALLACE: Does the GOP needs to do a better job of reaching out to people who hold those views?
STEELE: I think -- I think that's an important opportunity for us, absolutely. Within our party we do have those who have that view as well as outside and my partnership with Christy Todd Whittman was an effort to build a bridge between moderates and conservatives.

The Michael Steele supporters are the majority, it seems.
You sound like one of those lost souls, a libertarian. LOL
Of course. That’s what Steele is saying.
oh great just a RINO with darker skin pigmentation.
we dump mccain in order to get mccain from a different state.
NO THANKS.
Time to fire up the emails folks.
Time for steele to feel the heat of the core of the GOP.
How do Republicans shed the need to present themselves as 'compassionate'? Conservative principles require discipline, hard work, ethics, doing what is right. There is nothing literally 'compassionate' about liberalism, its theology is about spreading around the misery index. Electing peoples who are self disciplined in the abilities in spreading the misery index promising peace, peace, peace, and prosperity has filled the void that 'compassionate' conservatism created.
The Reagan Democrats were self disciplined, hard working, and for the most part ethical peoples. The majority of them lived really really hard times. However, their offspring do not have a clue what hard times mean, but at the pace things are going they are going to find out real fast and the majority of them have no education on how to survive.
And the majority of these offspring of Reagan Democrats see government as the giver and taker of rights. They have become government slaves to answer other peoples problems. I know many hard working people, yet they work very hard looking for short cuts to succeed. That works only for so long before they reach a dead end and have to turn to government or relatives for a hand out.
Compassionate conservatism created more liberal minded people than it freed.
Nah. I volunteer at the self-designated 'soup kitchen Church' in my Catholic diocese. The "attendees" seem to enjoy eating.
Good post though, you're very clever.
JESUS is smiling down on you Brother!

I think they are trying to infiltrate and dilute our strength. We haven’t seen the last of Giuliani and his like, they are still lurking and hoping!
Weird thing is, they won’t win more elections. They got McCain who is not conservative and he lost. WHen they pick moderates and reach across the aisle candidates they lose.
This convinces me more than ever that they all come together at the top, there are hidden string pullers, and the two party system and elections and all that goes with it are merely a smoke screen to fool us while they fire up the Soylent Green factories.
I am beyond angry and disgusted.
As I recall when Bob Dole was asked about this plank in the republican platform, he replied "I never read that darn thing." (paraphrased)
How did that work for him?
Flyover country had no idea Rock Hudson was a homosexual then. The Supreme Court had not yet legalized sodomy and the Brady Bunch was still cutting edge for letting married people share a bed on TV.
Gotcha.
Like shooting fish in a barrel.
I hope by now you realize that you’ve proved my point.
I’ve led you to think I was unaware of Palin’s veto of same sex benefits, but - more than that - I wanted to see if you would or could acknowledge that she was constrained by the Alaska Constitution. But you did not.
Why would you attack Sarah Palin in that fashion?
I still maintain you are pro-gay/pro-abortion. And a Palin basher to boot.
2000 and 2004 mantra: "Broken Glass"
2008 screed: "Hold our Nose"
2012 whelp: "Bite the Pillow"
This clandestine liberalism within republicanism is exactly the reason that the republican party cannot be trusted. There is a concerted effort to deceive conservatives. It adds to my belief that McCain did not try to win, and it is another indication that perhaps God does not want me to have anything to do with the “conservatism” of the republican party.
Maybe not for you, but it absolutely has a lot to do with the Christian conservatives that some more high brow members of the party find embarrassing. That's been said often.
We shouldnt be excluding people because they dont subscribe perfectly to what YOU choose to define is conservative.
I haven't said anything like that, only that the party should appeal to all potential voters with the same basic message. That excludes no one.
And, still, no on has really described what "reaching out" means, unless it's just another word for pandering. Or, maybe it means delivering the same basic appeal to different people in different venues than in the past. But that's still just using the same appeal for all, as it should be.

Small typing errors folks, can lead to big blunders.
Must be a moral truth in there somewhere.
How many Steele-bashing threads are we going to have? We don’t have President Bush to beat up any more, so we’ll go for Steele?
Michael Steeele is not currently a candidate for office. The role of the chairman of the RNC is to get Republican candidates elected to office, not determine who the candidates are or their stances on issues. Those determinations are made by GOP voters in primaries and the candidates themselves.
Are we to relegate every gay in America to the Dems? Is there the supposition that all gays are liberal? I know several gays personally who are hard-core conservative and don’t follow the ‘gay agenda.’ Should we write them off as GOP voters?
Many GOP women are pro-choice. We’re to write them off, too?
The objection to reaching out to those who don’t fit the white-anglo-saxon-evangelical-older GOP stereotype is absurd.
Under this theory, the GOP can write off every office in the Northeast, the upper Midwest and the West Coast .. why bothere even to field candidates? We’ll hold onto SC/GA/AL/OK/TX, etc and the hell with the rest of the country ?
Are conservatives too dumb to emulate what Rahm Emmanuel did to achieve his majorities in the House and Senate? He forced locals to field more conservatives candidates who could win. The center of each party is what enables the more ideological to hold positions of power (chairmanships) and get their agendas thru.
But, oh, no .. we can’t have any centrists who might appeal to pro-choice women, to gays, to those who maybe think an assault rifle isn’t necessary for hunting. We are going to remain ideologically pure and a permanent minority. Yep, way to go.
I was one of them. I had thought he would back conservatives, to give US leadership. We have LOTS of conservatives, just not all of them are willing to get up and vote for a party that only partly represents them. Steele may have just made it certain that they never will support the GOP again.
