WASHINGTON Tom Daschle said Monday that he's "deeply embarrassed and disappointed" about his failure to pay more than $120,000 in taxes. President Barack Obama's pick to head the Health and Human Services Department apologized for his mistake in a letter to the Senate Finance Committee released Monday. Daschle is expected to answer questions from the panel later in the day in a closed session. Daschle said he profoundly regrets the errors that the committee has had to deal with and he is willing to answer any questions. The committee reported that Daschle recently filed amended tax returns to reflect $128,203 in back taxes and $11,964 in interest. It remains to be seen whether the tax issue will stall or derail Daschle's nomination. But Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mon., chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, issued a statement supporting Daschle's confirmation. "I have applauded Senator Daschle's nomination to the post of HHS secretary, and my faith in his dedication and qualifications has only been bolstered in recent weeks by our numerous conversations about the pressing need for comprehensive health care reform," Baucus said in the statement Monday. "The ability to advance meaningful health reform is my top priority in confirming a Secretary of Health and Human Services, and I remain convinced that Senator Daschle would be an invaluable and expert partner in this effort. I am eager to move forward together."

yeah, cleaning cabinets in jail.
‘Apology accepted, Captain Needa....”
Darth Vader, Star Wars
(if only it ended in real life the way that did)
OK All better.
So what? Let him rot in Federal prison.
There would be a very clean federal prison cell waiting for you in Rochester, MN.
So why isn't he deeply indicted and incarcerated?
Let him rot in Federal prison.
Instead, he gets to rot the Department of Health and Human Services with socialized medicine.....
I wonder how long it would have taken him to finally discover and fix his “errors” if he hadn’t been appointed to the cabinet?
Are you questioning his patriotism?
Excellent question and the answer is.....NEVER!
Exactly. These “mistakes” only come out once the nomination is given. There are thousands of people who are not nominated. Would love to see their taxes.
The amount of money he owes lets me wonder that this bast@rd was never going to pay his taxes. What has GW done to let these creeps get away with this so long?
I’m “deeply saddened” he’s not in jail.
This guy had no intention of ever paying his taxes had he not been selected for a cabinet post. What would happen to me if I had owed $120,000.00 in back taxes?
How much do you want to bet that he would never have paid the taxes if he had not be offered the cabinet post. /sarc
Are you questioning his patriotism?
Yes!....I thought Joe Biden said it was patriotic to pay higher taxes never mind not paying them at all!
The Obama campaign was more interested in background checks on Joe The Plumber than the Obama administration is interested in background checks of those nominated for the cabinet.
I guess paying your taxes or higher taxes is just for us slobs in the trenches......
It’s not going to matter whether Daschle gets confirmed or not, because Obama has already given Daschle another title, in addition to the Secretary of Health and Safety, another job title that will not require Senate approval.I forget what the title is, but it amounts to a job to push socialized medicine down our throats, and he gave Daschle an office in the West Wing.
That’s actually the interesting part. All of the real workers in the Obama administration will be in the west wing, telling Obama what to say and do, not across the street.
