The devastated grandparents were told they would never see the youngsters again unless they dropped their opposition.
The couple, who cannot be named, wanted to give the five-year-old boy and his four-year-old sister a loving home themselves. But they were ruled to be too old - at 46 and 59.
For two years they fought for their rights to care for the children, whose 26-year- old mother is a recovering heroin addict.
They agreed to an adoption only after they faced being financially crippled by legal bills.
The final blow came when they were told the children were going to a gay household, even though several heterosexual couples wanted them.
When the grandfather protested, he was told: 'You can either accept it, and there's a chance you'll see the children twice a year, or you can take that stance and never see them again.'
The man said last night: 'It breaks my heart to think that our grandchildren are being forced to grow up in an environment without a mother figure. We are not prejudiced, but I defy anyone to explain to us how this can be in their best interests.'
Social workers themselves have admitted that the little girl is 'more wary' of men than women.
The case, in Edinburgh, raises worrying issues about state interference in family life.
It will also fuel concern over the practice of gay adoption, which has been promoted by Left-wing ministers and council bosses.
Some local authorities forbid adoption by smokers and obese people but actively support gay fostering and adoption - even though research shows overwhelmingly that children are best brought up by a mother and father.

The whole and entire point of socialism is the possession of the power of life and death over others; and such power becomes useless unless exercised. You could safely wager that the bureaucrats involved achieved satisfaction comparable to successfully completed coitus.

After they’re done confiscating our 401K money to bail out social security, look for them to systematically deny medical procedures, etc., to anyone over 70. A long time ago I read Ira Levin’s book “This Perfect Day.” And with the rise of Obama, I can see this happening, not in my lifetime, but in my son’s. One World.

Really that’s all that needs to be said, but I’ll add that I know a husband and wife in their early 50s who are raising an adopted six-year-old daughter, and a more energetic, fun-loving bunch you’ll never find.
Some fat pig of a social worker told them that, but there are people helping them financially now, and by the way, this is in not-great Britain, not the US, as has been made clear over and over again. :)
No, it's much easier to strongly encourage (pressure) them to abort. That's the more pro-active, progressive way.
I’m guessing that if mom is an addict, these grandparents have been raising the kids probably their whole lives. I’m a 60 year old grandma with a less than totally functional daughter and know that if we lost contact with our 8 year old granddaughter it would be a huge trauma for her. Evil social engineers.
That piece of news made my day - the reason social services get away with such Draconian actions is that they bankrupt the people - they count on them not being able to continue fighting as they run our of money - and, of course, social services has unlimited funds - out of the tax payers pockets.
We need a cadre of 'wealthy tycoons' who would jump in and fight these Cretans. If there were an 'organization' of tycoons that would be known to so help in cases like this, social services would be likely to think a little harder.
In my state, I had an organization and worked hand in hand with others, to fight these people - One of the things we were able to do was to prevent them from getting a law passed that would exempt social service workers from being sued, individually, no matter their actions.
People in England have voted for all of this for years, and I would imagine most have no sympathy for the grandparents.
46 and 59 are “too old”? I seem to recall Tony Blair’s wife gave birth at 45!

social workers really need to examine how the life span of gay men is much lower than the norm due to their prediliction of anal sex.
Anal sex is much worse for the health than smoking.
Give the kids back to the grandparents.
What is a Brit to do? This sounds like a parody but it’s government blackmail and bullying dressed up as social welfare. God help us, pray for this once great nation.
Step back a bit and examine why homosexuality is promoted:
it destroys the value of the traditional nuclear family.
This is the underlying effect (and goal) of 99% of leftist policies.
Forcible adoption in England is a deeply disturbing trend.
May the Lord help us to stand, and fight evil.
Yet.Lots of us are locked and cocked.
I agree, but look at the point they have chosen to argue about - life span.
They can’t accurately hold ground on that one.
Gay men get sick at a higher rate than the rest of the population.
Gay men die younger.
These grandparents will outlive those gay men.
Take the argument and throw it right back in their faces.
Assuming that the Grandmother is 46; most women at that age could bare children of her own.
And when we get “universal healthcare” and rationing starts to be implemented from the top down,
you can guarantee that male homosexual behavior will NOT be a disqualifying factor like “smoking” or “old” or “Christian” will be.
