Senator: Appointment wouldn't affect Senate makeup

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Sen. Judd Gregg has told colleagues that if he becomes commerce secretary, his replacement would affiliate with the GOP, denying Democrats' total dominance, his party leader said Sunday.

If such a deal were made, what law(s) would it be based on? Or to put it another way, if the deal were broken, what law(s) would be broken? And what branch of government would enforce/prosecute this?

It seems to me that the replacement would have to be named and seated before Gregg irrevocably resigns his position in the Senate.

Uh huh. I am thinking of Warren Rudman, who told Bush 41 what a great choice David Souter would be to the SCOTUS, and later was laughing and hugging Joe Biden for having put one over on the president.

Not saying there's any real connection, but as someone in Boston I can tell you, there are New England Republicans, and there are New England "Republicans".
