US President Barack Obama has congratulated Iraqis for holding a largely peaceful vote for provincial councils across the country.
He called the elections "an important step forward" for Iraqi self-determination. PM Nouri Maliki hailed them as "a victory for all the Iraqis".
There was a strong turn-out in Sunni areas, which boycotted the last polls.
The first nationwide vote in four years is seen as a test of stability before a general election due later this year.
"I congratulate the people of Iraq on holding significant provincial elections today," Mr Obama said in a statement.
"This important step forward should continue the process of Iraqis taking responsibility for their future."
Mr Obama urged the newly elected councils to "get seated, select new governors, and begin work on behalf of the Iraqi people who elected them".
Earlier, Mr Maliki said this was "a day of happiness for all the Iraqi people and for all those who love Iraq".

If I recall when Hussein was in charge ( the other Hussein ) the polling was always very peaceful..............
Its only the MOST successful Military campaign run in the history of humanity. Yea, Iraq is a quagmire alright.
Bambi, you had NOTHING to do with this success!
Of course he praised it.
After all, he can take credit for it.
I’m surprised he even issued a statement. He appears to want to ignore Iraq....perhaps in hopes that his base will think that country fell off the map and doesn’t exist anymore. And, they are so stupid, they probably would believe that.
Can you spell S-U-R-G-E, you twit? You know, the one you said would fail...the one you said had failed?

Maybe he will call Bush for a job well done.:)
Obama said the surge would fail.
What happened BO?
He should have hailed George Bush at the same time, that would have been priceless (and deserved)
“Obama said the surge would fail.”
Yes he did.
And that was while our young Marines were patroling dangerous areas in war zones.
A completely and utterly irresponsible statement that no doubt emboldened the enemy all across Iraq and probably accounted for American and coalition casualties.
Agreed.
Obama championed defeat in Iraq for years.
Never forgive, never forget.

He should also take note of the means by which the Iraqi attempted to prevent “multiple votes” by the same “Acorn Poll Rats”....
One would think that the U.S. should be able to do as much to protect the sanctity of the vote as the 7th century culture in Iraq.
Hey, Hussein. You’re suppose to say it’s Bush’s fault.
Hey, Hussein. You’re suppose to say it’s Bush’s fault.
Does not matter.
Things like Iraq are all or nothing. There is no such thing as a 90% answer. Leave when Iraq isn’t ready, and the new republic will be torn apart by outside (Iran, Syria, AQ) and internal forces. It’s either victory or failure, and even if things look really good and all pat each other on the back for a job well done, it will all come undone if we leave to early or don’t commit the right resources now.
Iraq is sort of like a cancer. We’ve beaten it into remission. But if we stop the chemo, radiation therapy, and surgical interventions, the cancer will return with a vengeance and consume us quickly. Success can quickly turn into a real quagmire, unlike the political expeditious one years past.
For the last 3 months, our KIA have been 14, 17, 16 AND 15.
Of those....7,10, 9 AND 11 have been non-hostile.
We are losing more than TWICE as many troops in non-hostile accidents as we are to enemy fire.
Either turn em lose against Iran or bring em home
