Second ballot:
168 ballots. 85 to win --
Mike Duncan - 48
Michael Steele - 48
Katon Dawson - 29
Saul Anuzis - 24
Ken Blackwell - 19
When I caucused for Dukakis in Minnesota in whatever year that was, we discussed, loudly, passionately, and at great length, all the local issues as well - every pothole, every drug-dealing street corner, and those concerns went up the political line as well. It dragged on for hours, and I loved it. The only people who show up are the ones who really care about their precinct, so you can make grassroots connections and actually try to get something done. I wish Virginia would go back to the caucus system.
Steele is a loser- so he’s well qualified to head the RNC...
Seriously, “loser” could fairly be put on any of these guys.
Blackwell at least has a record of fighting hard.
Let’s hope Steele doesn’t do eveny worse as Chairman of the national party than he did as chairman of Maryland’s.
Balloting has stopped.
Al Franken showed up, and said he won this election. /s
I agree.
Go Man of Steele! I really like him.
How many more rounds of voting?
As many as it takes to get a majority.
3rd Ballot Results:
Steele 51
Duncan 44
Blackwell 15
Didn’t catch the rest
Last Friday when Michael Steele was sitting in for Bill Bennett on “Morning in America” he defended Eric Holder (an old friend of his, he said.) His logic was that Holder will be confirmed and Republicans should lay off and not waste their shots. That logic doesn’t go very far with me.
Steele is articulate and looks good on TV, but I need to be convinced of his depth. The Republicans have a chance to win the House back in 2010. That has to be done if we are going to stop BO, and we need a Chairman who will focus on that like a laser.
Looks like Duncan is toast — the next RNC chairman will be either Steele or Dawson.
I heard that as well while driving in to work via Bennett’s show (which is pretty boring to be honest).
That doesn’t change my view it can’t be Duncan, due to his unavoidable losing record in the position.
I’d agree. Duncan’s high water mark was the first ballot and the shift is going from him and Blackwell to Steele and Dawson. Anuzis is holding firm, but there may be some horsetrading coming up.
DUNCAN has to go !
Let me add, Blackwell’s plan was to stay in and build for five ballots, but the way he is slipping, that doesn’t look likely. I wonder if he releases his supporters soon.
Steele has depth. Plenty of it. But like anyone, you won’t agree with him on everything. A few weeks back, he predicted that Holder would not pass confirmation. That was before Geitner sailed through and we saw how completely valueless this Congress is.
Thanks!
My bet is it ends up being Steele v. Dawson

Well, it looks like you're gonna get him. I wish I shared your enthusiasm for the guy. I don't.
I'm all for broadening the base, but if he walks away from the current GOP platform, he'll drive millions of social conservatives out of the party. I'll be one of 'em and I suspect Gov. Palin won't be too thrilled either.
Similarly, if he embraces gun restrictions as he has in the past, same results...millions will walk away from the party.
We'll see because it looks like he'll win.
