Michele Bachmann: The perils of spending like it's 1929
Minn-St Paul Star Trib ^

Posted on 01/30/2009 8:52:07 AM PST by davek70

It's been almost one year and $1.5 trillion since the government began its historic slate of financial bailouts -- and all we have to show for it is red ink dripping from our nation's balance sheet. Congress has been busy writing checks to everyone from Detroit automakers to Wall Street day traders. We're now nearing a historic $11 trillion debt. Each time Congress goes to the taxpayer ATM, it claims that this will be the bailout that gets the economy moving again. For instance, on the night the Senate passed the $700 billion Wall Street bailout, the Senate's finance chairman, Max Baucus, confidently declared: "I'm very proud of what we did. This is going to mark the time when we've turned the corner. And we will begin to see this financial crisis beginning to abate." But things got only worse. And despite the serious risks to our long-term stability, this failed strategy of big-government stimulus continues in full force. This week, in fact, President Obama and the Democratic Congress asked for another near-trillion in federal deficit spending. Their plan promises an agenda styled after the economic policies of the Great Depression -- government jobs programs, enormous infrastructure spending, huge amounts of pork and a slew of government handouts. But before we return to the 1930s, we may want to review a little history. The stock market collapse of 1929 brought a crashing halt to the Roaring Twenties. But President Herbert Hoover's response to the economic crisis ensured that it became a genuine catastrophe. Contrary to popular perception, Hoover did not respond to the downturn with inaction or indifference -- rather, he pursued a series of misguided big-government adventures that lengthened and deepened our economic woes.

Gawd, I love this woman.... can she run w/ Sarah in 2012? Or at least be speaker when GOP regains the House?

As usual, the lib vile comments below the story show no valid arguments or points, just the usual hate and attacks of the person, not the issue.

Other than Sarah, there is no one that the leftist bloggers have been more vile towards than Rep Bachman, on Youtube and the news sites. Maybe that’s our litmus test.

Do I see a parody in the future? “So tonight I'm gonna spend like it's 1929.”

OK Palin groupies, this congresswoman Michele Bachmann has my heart. Pelosi directed special funding to defeat her, and lost. And Mathews/MSNBC put words in her mouth, and he gave Colin Powell the talking points to attack her in a press conference just before election. And RINOs abandoned her. But now she again fights the monster for us, the little people!

I find it interesting that the conservatives with the most balls don’t actually have balls.

Palin, Bachmann, Coulter.

God Bless them. They are the real leaders.

Mine too.

I'm very glad that I sent her a contribution during the recent election.

Me too!

She should form a PAC in the House the way Jim DeMint did in the Senate. All monies to that PAC go directly to conservatives they do not go through the GOP.

How does spending (newly printed money, which devalues our money by 26%) do anything besides ... the result being spending the UNITED STATES into oblivion?

It is insane, really. Bound to fail. ONLY FASTER. Looking at the election past, ... we (conservatives) Republicans were set up to fail and have Obama win, from the get go. Powers behind the scenes were working for 4 years on making it happen. It did.

We are duped. We play by the rules; and it makes/allows evil to win. Our nation is far down the way to self destruction, I fear.

It takes extra courage for a Republican officeholder to speak ill of Herbert Hoover, who was until recently on a pedestal just to the right of ol' Abe himself among party loyalists. It was as if the Great Depression (i.e., GD #1) was all the fault of that socialist Roosevelt.

Now if only Republicans would come to their senses about the Great Emancipator, I might consider rejoining the party.

I always thought the Great Depression was the fault of Calvin Coolidge and the results dumped onto Hoover’s head.

"(Let's try competent conservatism for a change.)"

I've always preferred "considerate conservatism" over all other forms, myself.

Bachmann is a good conservative from the little that I have read. She is GOA A-rated on the 2A.
