What's good for Rush Limbaugh is bad for Republicans
National Post ^ | David Frum

Posted on 01/29/2009 9:48:49 PM PST by indcons

Gallup's latest polling reveals the continuing collapse of the Republican party's base vote. The news is so very bad that there will be only one possible response from GOP party leadership and our radio talkers: Ignore it.

--SNIP--

Instead, our congressmen talk to and about Rush Limbaugh like Old Bolsheviks praising Comrade Stalin at their show trials. Rush is right! We see eye to eye with Rush! There is no truth outside Rush!

Rush and Hannity and O’Reilly and Ann Coulter and the others have their place and their role. They spoke for an important section of public opinion, and it is a section our party needs. But it is only a section, and not the whole. The more the party allows them to become our public face, the more embattled and endangered the party becomes.

The relationship between these radio talkers and the larger Republican and conservative world has become parasitic and antagonistic. They flourish and profit to the extent they can polarize and radicalize. The GOP will recover only to the extent that it moderates and reaches out. They benefit from controversies that position them as the leaders and designated speakers for conservative America. But the more visible they become, the more our party is shoved to the margins and rendered unelectable. What is good for Rush is bad for the GOP, and what is good for the GOP is bad for Rush.

....Old Bolsheviks praising Comrade Stalin at their show trials.

Tell us all about Mr. Frump..... I thought you social liberals put on a fairly decent Bolshevik show over the past 8 years.

For a guy that is so terrible for the GOP, the dems sure give him a lot of press. For a party that is falling apart, the dems sure give them a lot of press. Anything to take the spotlight off a clueless dem president and congress.

Barf is correct - This moron is a Centrist Republican (RINO).

He can stuff his kool aid attitudes and lust to do what his supreme comrade Barack Hussein Obama wants done.

These ignorant buffoons are the reason the GOP is in such a disarray.

I am always so cheered when liberals show true concern for the futures of the GOP. LOL. If the GOP had any sense at all it would take all this blather as a "perfect negative barometer". Μολὼν λάβε

Frum should be hit over the head with an Obama campaign sign just for saying “moderate and reach out.” I’d like to reach out to Frum with a tarantula.

Bingo! Frum got the candidate he wanted, the big government "conservative", the "reformer", the "maverick", the candidate, who criticized capitalism, wall street and greed. Frum, you got what you wanted, why aren't you happy? If he hadn't picked Palin. he wouldn't have reached 46%. As Rush says, the GOP hasn't been listening to him for years or they would have acted differently. The collapse of the GOP base vote has been going on for years and the elected GOP'ers haven't done a d*mn thing to change that direction.

Let's see what the GOP's numbers are, after the House GOP voted unanimously against the "stimulus" bill. I bet, it goes up.

And, Mr. Frum, exactly what is it that Rush advocates, depresses the GOP's numbers? I'm curious here. Or is it just PR that Rush has been demonized by the media, so people, who don't listen to Rush, don't like him (until they start listening).

David Frum, from the pre-emtive surrender wing of the GOP. No victory, before defeat!!!!

What’s good for Dave Frum is to stick an enema hose in one ear and irrigate his head.

Rush gives us a voice. Rush *is* a voice. Rush is one of the biggest dominoes among conservative citizens. Knock him down and maybe the rest of them fall. None of us should let that happen.

Maybe to those who have NO PRINCIPLES. There is such a thing as belief in what is right. This is just politics and nonsense. The GOP HAS NOTHING TO LOSE AT THIS POINT. It is on the Demonrats who have gotten away with lies and political malice for so long. It will not help to join in the march to communism and just going along for what may seem popular now. Everything the Demonrats are pushing is so radical and out of line it will make this country suffer and the Republicans should know polls are fleeting. And they should learn to stand up for themselves and call the Demonrats out for their ties to this economic downfall as they are the party directly tied to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac which brought this on.

That's the problem and this is exactly why Obama got elected. It was “moderate” mushy middle independents and “republicans” that crossed over and elected the Zero.

They have lost their moral direction and no longer understand the consequences or what empty promises or rhetoric reveal about who they cast their vote for. Regardless of the candidates past, lack of character/honesty, or extreme Leftist track record.

They actually make the claim that they believed strongly that Obama would be a moderate and more like Reagan/Lincoln than a Marxist.

This is the undeniable truth that Conservatism cannot exist without strong principles and strict loyalty to that tradition.

Frum is essentially arguing that the GOP needs to go even MORE to the left and go the 1970s ‘me-too’ route and he couldn’t be more wrong.

As bad as the economy and unpopular the president was at election time, the Democratic candidate still only squeaked by in a close election.

We lost because the Republican president betrayed our core values such as minimizing economic intervention and curbing illegal immigration. We lost because we fielded a candidate who promised more of the same, thus the GOP’s base was not energized.

What does need to change is to abandon the idea that freedom, superiority of our culture and family values are traditional — and thus tacitly concede that collectivism, cultural relativism and licentiousness are somehow the ideas of the future.

Freedom is still by far the most radical concept and has only been embraced by a fraction of the world’s population. The Left is in fact preaching the most retrograde of ideas and should be portrayed as such.

We certainly don’t need to have the Republican Party be the Democratic Party ‘lite.’
