Study: (ADULT) Stem Cells Reverse Paralysis in Rats

Transplanted adult stem cells have been found to reverse paralysis associated with spinal cord injuries in lab rats, a new study finds.
The study, headed up by Miodrag Stojkovic, deputy director and head of the Cellular Reprogramming Laboratory at Centro de Investigacion Principe Felipe in Spain, involved transplanting so-called progenitor stem cells from the lining of rats' spinal cords into rodents with serious spinal cord injuries.
The rats recovered significant motor activity one week after injury, Stojkovic and his co-authors wrote in the Jan. 27 early online edition of the journal Stem Cells.
Spinal cord injury, for which no therapy currently exists to undo the damage, is a major cause of paralysis. Up to 400,000 people in the United States are estimated to live with these injuries, according to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. Most spinal cord injuries are caused by vehicle crashes and falls, and most of those injured are males.
The researchers say the new rat results "open a new window on spinal cord regenerative strategies."
The rat study involved adult stem cells, which are found in adult tissues. It is the other type of stem cells, embryonic stem cells, that some activists find objectionable, partly because these cells are derived from embryos though a process that currently destroys them.
Last week, there was big news related to embryonic stem cells. The Food and Drug Administration approved the first study to inject human-derived embryonic stem cells into individuals with acute spinal cord injuries.
The Bush Administration had placed restrictions on federal funding for new lines of embryonic stem cells for research, but the cells to be used in the study are old ones that would still have been eligible for funding in the Bush era. It is expected that President Obama will lift the restrictions

The embryonic stem cell folks are in a desperate race to make sure adult stem cells don’t get the credit for miracle cures.
The adult stem cells are the ones that have shown the most promise, and still the goons in the embryonic camp, push ahead.
As much as I would like to see cures, I hope the embryonic cell efforts fall flat.

Note that the headline omitted fact that it was ADULT stem cells (my correction) as usual. Humans can not receive the stem cells we harvest by killing babies. Our bodies reject them just as they do any foreign tissue from a doner. The difference with stem cells is that we are planning on asking the donated and rejected tissues to heal and rebuild organs and systems as they are being rejected. Its the dirty little secret Michael J. Fox and Christopher Reeve forgot to tell you about.

The difference that makes adult stem cells VASTLY superior is they are from the patients own body. Emryonic stem cells are problematic because you have to get the body to not regrect them, like they try to do with transplanted organs. The future will be adult stem cells derived from one’s own tissue, not embryonic ones.

Interesting article. I have a sister with MS, so I hope they’re on to something. I would point out, just for consistency, that the article never uses the term “adult stem cells.” It says the cells were harvested from the parient’s bone marrow, and leaves what to call them up to the reader. BTW, President Bush was a big supporter of adult stem cell research.

Fox grew up in the age when there were experts in the field who argued that embryonic stem cells would not be rejected because, after all, they were not taken from adults with fully functioning immune systems.
Of course that was junk science. Foreign cells are always rejected unless they are genetically identical, or, in some cases "pret'near" identical.
At some point Michael because too sick to learn new material, so his mind rejected the more advanced understanding of the immune system. He continues to adhere to "magic thinking" believing that another dead baby will result in his cure.
I believe that's what Ba'al worshippers thought ~ that the death of the innocent would improve their lives.

“The difference with stem cells is that we are planning on asking the donated and rejected tissues to heal and rebuild organs and systems as they are being rejected. “
It won’t always be this way. They will figure out how to prevent rejection. The new administration is going to allow more embryonic stem cell lines to be created, and finance new research. It probably won’t take long either.
It is unwise to use the lack of cures from embryonic stem cells as a reason not to support their use. Almost all medical treatments start at the same point, with the same obstacles. They will be overcome, and valuable treatments will emerge. That is the process of medical research.
It is better to argue against the use of embryonic stem cells because even at that early stage, the embryo is a human life, specially created by God. That won’t change. It will never be justifiable to sacrifice the life of one, to potentially save the life of another. That is the only reason for halting the use of embryonic stem cells in medical research.

They will be overcome, and valuable treatments will emerge. That is the process of medical research. I don't. I'm just personally offended when they use the dishonest promise of cures as justification for something I'm morally opposed to. Not that moral arguments work with them anyway. Even if they believed in God -and they don't, they still see human embryos as having fewer rights than a lab rat, so there is never anything to feel bad about.

“Foreign cells are always rejected unless they are genetically identical, or, in some cases “pret’near” identical.”
That is partially true. But there are many new treatments that can potentially reduce the risk of rejection. If organs can be successfully transplanted, by a combination of tissue typing and immunosuppression, then embryonic stem cells can be successfully introduced as well. It is only a matter of time.

It isn't the ones that don't believe in God that are so bad, at least they aren't hypocritical. It is the ones that claim to believe in God, which irritate me more. If they believed in God, they would have more respect for his creation. They are all liars and hypocrites, willing to sacrifice a human life to make a name for themselves. True that moral arguments don't work with some of them, but it is really the only valid argument to this question.

*In 2000, Israeli Scientists at Proneuron Implanted Melissa Holley's White Blood Cells Into Her Spinal Cord To Treat The Paraplegia Caused When Her Spinal Cord Was Severed In An Auto Accident. Melissa, Who Is 18, Has Since Regained Control Over Her Bladder And Recovered Significant Motor Function In Her Limbs - She Can Now Move Her Legs And Toes, Although She Cannot Yet Walk.
This Is Exactly The Kind Of Therapy That Embryonic-Stem-Cell Proponents Promise - Years Down The Road.
Yet Melissa's Breakthrough Was Met With Collective Yawns In The Biased, liberal, pro-abortion, socialist Press (MSM) With The Exception of a few outlets. Non-Embryonic Stem Cells May Be As Common As Beach Sand.
