Impeached Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has been removed from office

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The Illinois Senate voted to remove Gov. Rod Blagojevich from office Thursday, marking the first time in the state's long history of political corruption that a chief executive has been impeached and convicted.

The 59-0 vote followed several hours of public deliberation in which senator after senator stood up to blast Blagojevich, whose tenure lasted six years. And it came after a four-day impeachment trial on allegations that Blagojevich abused his power and sold his office for personal and political benefit.

The conviction on a sweeping article of impeachment means the governor was immediately removed from office. The Senate also unanimously voted to impose the "political death penalty" on Blagojevich, banning him from ever again holding office in Illinois.

The State of Ill. just proved what can be accomplished if they all work together.

It's a pity they didn't give the man a real chance to defend himself by issuing subpeonas to Rahm Emanual, Congresscritter Jackson, Jr, and the "O" himself.

He should move to New York . . . or New Jersey . . . or Michigan.

well, he went down swinging, or talking, whichever. Has he outlived his usefulness? Is he going to be used for shark chum for the press to distract the public from the REALLY DIRTY stuff going on in the Windy City?

I thought it would have been interesting to see just whose machine got the most grease. I sort of wish it had lasted a little bit longer, but I guess if you are going to shut somebody up and rubbing them out isn't really a good idea at the time, might as well impeach and remove. Advice for Blago: WATCH YOUR BACK!!

I suspect that this is the reason for the quickie impeachment of Blago. Now the he's not in office anymore will the Fed prosecutor have any reason to issue an indictment? I wonder how soon will this case just quietly drop out of the news?

Time to spill the beans. Where are the conservative talk show hosts and publications waiting to interview him?

I’m going to miss that SOB. What great theater he provided.

Glenn Beck asked a great question on his show tonight: if Blago was so crooked, why didn't anyone in Illinois (state government, local government, Chicago) rat him out earlier in his 6-7 years in office?

Beck didn't answer that question but I think it's obvious: because they're all crooks and they were all sipping from the same rotten stew!

Talk about good theater: wait til Governor Blago starts ratting out his colleagues... and maybe our new Messiah who seemed to scamper through Illinois politics without losing any of his "glow".

His crime?

Peddling influence?

No.

He was peddling influence outside the beltway.

Is Blago a Republican? The article seems to have left that part out.

Exactly, if it went to court Blago would sing...Obama stated that he had “one...or two conversations (duh) about his vacant senate seat. The fix is in. Sacrifice Blago to protect the skeletons in the closet.
