Obama's 1st Bill Limits Freedom in Hiring
Patriot Room ^ | 1-29-09 | Scott Martin

President Obama signed his first bill into law on Thursday, approving "equal-pay" legislation that he said would “send a clear message that making our economy work means making sure it works for everybody.” In reality, this bill limits the freedom of both employee and employer, and reduces people to representatives of their gender, not the sum of their abilities and aptitudes.

Mr. Obama was surrounded by a group of beaming lawmakers... as he affixed his signature to the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, a law named for an Alabama woman who at the end of a 19-year career as a supervisor in a tire factory complained that she had been paid less than men.

After a Supreme Court ruling against her, Congress approved the legislation that expands workers’ rights to sue in this kind of case, relaxing the statute of limitations.

“It is fitting that with.. the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act we are upholding one of this nation’s first principles: that we are all created equal and each deserve a chance to pursue our own version of happiness,” the president said.

Of course, Obama is aware that nobody is hired at gunpoint in America, and that the wage paid an employee is an agreement between two parties to exchange certain work for certain pay. Is Obama arguing that everyone should be paid the same in America? It would seem he is, if words are to have any meaning. You know, "just words" and all that. So in effect, President Obama is supporting equal pay for unequal work...

So far, Obama is turning out to be exactly who I feared he was.

Yes, I can say that as well.

I guess a person isn’t judged by their value to the business anymore, but rather their value as a member of the human race, screw the business.

It’s called “paying your debts”.

Next is the “Freedom of Choice” Act, removing all restrictions on abortion, followed by “card check”, which allows union goons to look over your shoulder while you vote.

To paraphrase Coach Dennis Green, “He is who we thought he was!!!”

Sure. We're all equal and fully interchangeable. Let's just have Michael Jordan performing open heart surgery, Albert Einstein playing professional basketball and Micheal DeBakey designing nuclear weapons...or perhaps Michelle Obama could step in a quarterback for the Steelers this weekend. As long as everyone is happy.

Less women will be hired now, thanks to King Obama.

Slippery slope time .... two people, same job, one is a terrific worker and one is less than average. If they are both men, then “no problem” pay one more than the other. But if one is a woman and one is a man, problems both ways. If the woman is better, she can only get what the poorer working man makes. Fun to watch these people make rules that are going to lead to the making of exceptions. I wonder if Obama put an expiration date on this bill (we should always ask for expiration dates from his statements and actions).

Well look at it this way, our list of grievances in the Second Declaration of Independence is going to be at least as long as Thomas Jefferson’s was in the original.

Can the next Congress overturn this once it becomes law? As I see it this new law could make it harder as a female to be hired for any job.

Obama thinks government is the solution to many things. Don’t think he is right. Government is only the solution to building the Democrat Party period.

Obama simply wants to do something to say he did something.
It does not matter if it is right, he is into trying to give the impression he did something. Much thought should be put into drastic actions, especially when Government becomes the solution.

“...or perhaps Michelle Obama could step in as quarterback for the Steelers this weekend...”

One of these things is not like that other! You were listing a bunch of patently absurd employment choices, like Michael Jordan doing open-heart surgery—and then you stuck this one in.

Just noting the absurdity of claiming that we are all "created equal". We're not. We should be compensated by the value we bring to the business. Not everyone is equally capable...even with the same job title.

When the less capable are paid the same as the more capable, there will be a revolt. It will come in the form of the more capable seeking different employment that recognizes the greater capability. Alternatively, the more capable parties could choose to limit their services to the lowest common denominator at the same pay grade. Either way, it won't go unanswered.

Bet on it. It's easier to simply not have an issue of "competitive pay" by having no competitors. The litigation expenses would kill a lot more of the bottom line than running understaffed.

And they will reduce their services and productivity to the same level as the women. Why bust your butt if there is no reward for the effort?

I think you missed my point, or I was obscure.

My point was:

Michelle Obama is NOT patently unqualified to be a quarterback in the NFL.

Good grief. Get the damn government out of the economy and out of the workplace. If they want to implement this garbage for government employees, so be it. But stay the hell out of private enterprise, you socialist scum.

Sorry. I haven't watched a football game since 1981. Perhaps I should have suggested Britney Spears for that position.
