LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Well over a million people shivered in ice-bound homes across the country Wednesday, waiting for warmer weather and for utility crews to restring power lines brought down by a storm that killed 23 as it took a snowy, icy journey from the Southern Plains to the East Coast. But with temperatures plunging, utility officials warned that it could be mid-February before electricity is restored to some of the hardest-hit places.

THey have shelters and most of the hotels are open, but that’s going to get old in a hurry. If I was him, I’d get a generator. The ice should melt by this weekend.

I think the tricky part with underground lines is the need to have to dig every time someone hooks on to them, or when they need repair, which is much more expensive than climbing up a pole. So I don’t know if it would save money in the long run.
Re your tagline: true they don’t own the home but they do own the equity they’ve built in paying on the mortgage, albeit subject to markets whims.

Distribution lines shouldn’t be a problem to bury. Heat’s the issue with the big cross country transmission lines.

Did the candles provide any significant amount of heat? I’m very curious about that.

I keep a fair amount of supplies / provisions here at home “ just in case “ as New England weather can be pretty bad. I’ve a ton of candles but had never considered their use for heat.

I was out for a week after an ice storm - last line to get reconnected. Even though it warmed up after the first couple of days, I ended up with pneumonia.

I've thought about this before...there are FReepers all over the country. It would be nice if we could have a kind of brigade line where one person takes something needed by a brother or sister to another who adds to the supplies and moves them to the next freeper.

Those comments made by the President today were enough to knock the Hillary cookie baking comment down from the the Number One spot. He owns it, now.
