House GOP leader to Rush: Back off By: Jonathan Martin January 27, 2009 04:32 PM EST
Rush Limbaugh may command a large following, but his caustic comments Monday about the GOPs congressional leadership have one of the Houses leading conservatives defending his colleagues and offering an unusually candid critique of the talk radio powerhouse and his fellow commentators.
Responding to President Obamas recommendation to Republican congressional leaders last week that they not follow Limbaughs lead, the conservative talkmeister said on his show that Obama is obviously more frightened of me than he is Mitch McConnell. He's more frightened of me, than he is of, say, John Boehner, which doesn't say much about our party."
Rep. Tom Price, who heads the conservative Republican Study Committee, did not take kindly to this assessment in an interview with Politico Tuesday.
I think that our leadership, Mitch McConnell and John Boehner, are taking the right approach, Price said. I mean, its easy if youre Sean Hannity or Rush Limbaugh or even sometimes Newt Gingrich to stand back and throw bricks. You dont have to try to do whats best for your people and your party. You know youre just on these talk shows and youre living well and plus you stir up a bit of controversy and gin the base and that sort of that thing. But when it comes to true leadership, not that these people couldnt be or wouldnt be good leaders, theyre not in that position of John Boehner or Mitch McConnell.

Is this thing on?
FOLKS - I CALLED HIS OFFICE! THEY SAID HE DIDN’T SAY IT!!!!!!!
Is that an old picture of Rush? Or did they try to find one of the most horrible pic’s of him?
Normal response I believe.
I wrote to Orrin Hatch a while back and told him he would have huge numbers of followers if he’d stand up every day and fight the Democrats instead of caving in to them and trying to make them like him. (Pleeeeeeeez Teddy, love me and notice me!)
Where in the world Republicans ever got the idea that being nice to Harry and Nancy would get them anywhere is a mystery to me.
Well done. spouting off whining about the jellyfish spines of the GOP leaders is pointless - tell THEM what you want them to do! Call them directly and give them a piece of your mind. 202-224-3121.
I want the GOP leaders in Congress to stand up and vocally oppose the boondoggle aka stimulus bill. I told my senators and a local congressman, Rep John Carter. He is a good conservative and voted against the TARP bailout and would be a good vote against the boondoggle, so I had to say 'thanks' for standing up for conservative values to his office person, while conveying my desire to get every single Republican to vote against this horrible Democrat big-govt spending bill.
I think it does mean that folks should hold their fire.
I predict a “guest” on Rush’s show very soon. LOL
Yes. And that’s why they’ll try to take Rush and Hannity down, in any way possible. Probably why Colmes left the show - he saw the handwriting on the wall for conservatives in that venue.
Someone asked earlier if it’s drugs in the water in DC... that turns seemingly normal, decent conservatives into corrupt hacks and gutless wonders after a few years in Washington.
I think it’s just the close and prolonged proximity to
...E V I L... (all those lawyers, dontcha know).
Who cares what nitwit Price says. He couldn’t make a pimple on Rush’s rear.
I think is time to let Rep. Price know he is on the wrong path. We need to be emailing, writing, and calling his office right now and telling him to start standing up for a conservative agenda and not bowing downd to BO. He needs to be standing behind Rush not getting in the way or the GOP is goind to keep losing ground in future elections. The Democrats didn’t quit fighting after 94 so why should we.

Make your case. NO, not your case, make OUR case, and we will prevail and freedom will be restored.
The times, Congressman, call for greatness. Is there anyone in Congress who can answer that call?

MD, your post has brought tears to my eyes. If only the GOP could muster up such patriotic passion.
Somebody is prevaricating, either the reporter or the politician. After looking at those choices it’s obvious I forgot another option, they could both be liars.
The Republican Party, as a whole entity, truly continues to prove that it’s clueless about what it really needs to seriously do to successfully make a political comeback. For starters, they seriously need to fully listen to and then fully act upon what the majority of grassroot conservatives are seriously saying on all of the issues instead of continuously ignoring them most of the time. I also see the possibility of Mike Duncan successfully being re-elected as RNC Chair by enough members of the RNC, because of their continued ignorance of fully acting upon what grassroot conservatives still have to say about greatly improving the total Republican Party. I certainly do hope that I’m wrong about Mike Duncan being re-elected as RNC Chair and that Ken Blackwell is successfully elected as the new RNC Chair instead. There continues to truly be too many spineless Republicans and too many RINO Republicans that exist from within the party at each and every political level, and they can truly succeed at ending the existence of the Republican Party as a conservative party.
TEN Republicans voted for him. That's a lot.
Actually they are both good Republicans and very good politicians, especially McConnell. But they are not as vocal as they should be in leadership positions nor are they capable of attracting broad consensus among conservatives and independents.
Tom Delay and Newt Gingrich packed a wallop that the democrats feared, so much so that they threw every resource they had including their media to destroy them.
We need Conservative leaders that make democrats lay awake at night in fear. But we must not alienate those in the power ring such as Boehner and McConnell.
So Rush is right as usual. But to be fair to McConnell, he should give credit for all the brilliant work that McConnell has done behind the scenes.
As am I. The current GOP doesn't represent me. I changed to independent last Spring. This current group of Republicans are inept, tolerate corruption, expand government and waste money. Neither party represents my limited government, fiscal/social conservatism.
You've got your head in the sand and insult a lot of FReepers while you're at it. The GOP deserves to be bashed, and it ain't because of Politico or outside manipulation. It's because of cowardly Republicans in office who are too chickensh*t to use their bully pulpits to stand up for conservative values.
But you go ahead and pretend that the poor GOP and its idiot minions are being manipulated by Politico and other Liberal media, if it makes you feel better.
Trisham, thanks.
Is there any market for poorly aimed slightly used harangues? I got one here in the scratch and dent section .....
Perhaps you didn't notice this correction at the very end of the article:
Editor's note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly identified the GOP member as Rep. Tom Price. Politico regrets the error.
