Google's Rumored GDrive May 'Kill' the PC (anyone willing to give up their PC?)
Fox ^ | 1/26/2009 | Fox

Google's rumored "GDrive," a service that would enable users to access their PCs from any Internet connection, could kill off the desktop computer, The Guardian has reported.

The GDrive, unconfirmed by Google, is reported to launch this year, with tech news sites calling it the "most anticipated Google product so far."

The Google drive would shift away from Microsoft Window's operating system, in favor of "cloud computing," where storage and processing is done in data centers. Users would no longer have to rely on their computers' powerful hard drives.

Home and businesses have been turning toward web-based services, such as e-mail — including popular services Hotmail and Gmail — and photo storage, such as Flickr and Picasa. Users would no longer have to worry about their hard drives crashing, since data would be saved on the Web, and can be accessed from any machine.

The e-reader was going to do away with the need for books too, remember that one?

A perfect socialistic tool for the 21st century, sounds like somebody has been reading Fahrenheit 451.

I used a Yahoo online storage a few years ago. They closed it without notice and I lost the data I had stored there.

I used MediaMax online storage website site a few years ago. They closed it without notice and I lost the data I had stored there.

==

Use any online storage with caution and be sure to have a backup of essential data.

Actually what came to mind was the scene in the original Rollerball movie when James Caan went to Sweden to see where all the books were stored.

It was in a computer called ZERO. It's operator (Sir John Gielgud, I think?) turned out to be a nut. He told James that Zero was having a bad day. It had just lost the entire 13th Century.

When asked a question it couldn't answer and Sir John started kicking it.

No thanks, I think I like keeping my info safe.

NOPE!

I’m also not falling for the on-line back up service.

Already been tried. It was called the ASP ( Application service provider ). This is what one is currently;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Application_service_provider

But around 2000 it was proposed to do what the Google G drive says it's going to do. You were supposed to move all of your computer applications to the ASP servers. Your computer would become a dummy terminal. But of course they never answered the question of what one is supposed to do if the server is down, which happened more frequently then than now.

I never go anywhere and don’t even have a cell phone, so it’s pointless for me.
External drive storage is where it’s at.
You control it and if the crap hits the fan, just grab n go!

F&&k Google. I stopped using their search engine for anything more than chicken soup recipes because they keep your searches. I don't want anyone building up a list of my searches - that's private to me.

Can you imagine these Socialist @#@$%'s having access to ALL of your data? I'm sure they wouldn't engage in data mining, and turn over your info to the Homeland Security department if for instance you had information about reloading ammunition. < /sarc

Anyone willing to store their data where it is open to corporate snooping, or worse, where government will give itself the right to “analyze” and “profile” the contents of whatever files they give themselves the right to scan without any judicial oversight? Not me.

Two words: Bull. Shit. Any sensible computer-literate buffoon knows that the only thing this has to do with personal computers is another way to back up data stored on them. Do you EVEN KNOW how long it would take to store two terabytes of data (a practical standard for any home computer/workstation now days) online. Sheesh! The writer of this column fits squarely into this buffoon category, no matter what Google’s evil plan might be. To transfer 2Tb of data per month would roughly equal the cost of a quarterly Freepathon based on just the bandwidth use alone.

However, if Obama gets his way and removes bandwidth use restrictions, this could be mitigated, but anyone without 100Mbps uplink service would find it useless to store their files only online.

As a professional in this field, I call “foul” on this silly article.

LOL!!! My geeky teen daughter was actually trying to figure out how to convert a handtruck to work like a Segway this summer!! It was the “Hillbilly Segway project”.
Didn’t get past initial paper plans, however. But it was a fun time killer during the long summer days.

I have a 500gb hard drive in my storage computer. I think I’ll keep that instead of storing my stuff with evil Google.

I wonder if those two owners of google are KGB agents?

Trust google with all my data?

I don’t think so.

I watched as they ‘lost’ half a million hits on ‘barak obama birth certificate’ in mid July.

pc, laptop --> personal and as private as you like it vs Gdrive where Google staff can data mine for any and all info about us...

And, the Obambi plan to centralize all health info about the citizens is a bad idea too

both scenarios are scary

The fundamental reason this ain’t gonna happen is non-technical. If someone owns your data storage, they own you. This is as true from a privacy perspective as from a financial perspective. Only the weak minded will go for this for anything more than trivial amounts of trivial data.
