Hamas officials in Cairo have proposed a year-long truce with Israel and an opening of the crossings into the Gaza Strip, in the latest round of diplomatic meetings to build on a fragile ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
Hamas official Ayman Taha told reporters in Cairo on Sunday that his delegation was briefed by the Egyptians on an Israeli proposal for a year-and-a-half long truce with only partial opening of the border, which they rejected.
Instead, Taha says the group made a counter offer of a year with open borders, which they now must discuss with their leadership in Damascus.

Guess Hamas figures it’ll take about a year to get all the long(er) range rockets in place and ready to fire.
“year-long”—Hamas must be low on ammunition and tunnels. Just like before, that’s just enough time to replenish.
If Hamas are offering a truce it can only be because they have something sneaky in mind. They probably need a year to regroup after the bare-assed caning Israel has just given ‘em.
Don’t trust ‘em, Israel! Give them a truce only once you’ve finished whupping them, and even then do it on your terms, not theirs!

Yup, only a year's worth so far. Need to keep up until they ask for a 10 year truce, at the least.

Alas, the new envoy George Mitchell and the Obama admin. will consider this a perfectly reasonable proposal and will push hard for it.
Here's my proposal: seal up Gaza tighter than a drum and the border crossings will never be re-opened until Hamas disarms and dis members itself completely, invites comprehensive Israeli inspections/destruction of tunnels, bunkers, arms stashes etc.
