Iceland's senior minister resigns

Iceland's Minister of Commerce Bjorgvin Sigurdsson has resigned, two days after the prime minister announced his own departure due to pressures from the island nation's economic collapse.

Mr Sigurdsson, a member of Iceland's junior Social Democrat coalition party, made the announcment at a news conference this morning.

'I have decided to do this to take responsibility,' he

Prime Minister Geir Haarde shocked the country on Friday when he said he would not seek re-election and called for a general election on May 9.

The government of Iceland became the first in the world to be effectively brought down by the credit crunch.

It came after several nights of rioting over the financial crisis.

'I have decided not to seek re-election as leader of the Independence Party at its upcoming national congress,' he told a news conference.

The global financial crisis hit Iceland, which has a population 320,000, in October, triggering a collapse in its currency and financial system under the weight of billions of dollars of foreign debts incurred by its banks.

The economy is set to shrink 10 percent this year and unemployment is surging.

Protests had been held weekly since the crisis broke last year, but since Tuesday have been held every night.

On Thursday, police used teargas on demonstrators for the first time since protests against the North Atlantic island's entry into the NATO alliance in 1949.

Special forces had to rescue Mr Haarde from his car after he was surrounded by an furious mob hurling eggs and cans outside the government offices, in Reykjavik.

Really? What are those poor Icelanders going to do now that they don't have a government?

The government hasn't been taken down or removed, just the figurehead. The next joker to follow in his footsteps will try the same thing.........

Ya think?

Do you have parents or friends on Social Security?
Are you prepared to do whatever it takes to save them from starving?

Are you ready to go to New York (or LA, or and coast city) and inspect all the small boats coming in to see if they have suitcase nukes on board?

We need the government to change and shrink and become more efficient, but if it went away, your very life might literally be at risk - overnight.

Sounds like the Icelanders are braver than Americans. We cannot be bothered because another college ball game will be on in a half hour. The TV news media knows we are addicted to TV and the elites can do anything. Until Republicans cancel their TV - they will never think we are serious. Hit em in their pocketbooks but wait - a new ball game is on now.

Kudo’s to the Icelanders for storming the govt with torches and pitchforks.

That is probably not one of your best ideas! We want the government to be responsible and to quit wasting our money.

If they continue on this path, many will pay with their lives just as they have in every country socialism has been tried.

Wait til poor folk realize that their digital TV converter boxes don’t work, even with an amplified antenna.

And the gov’t is spending an extra $650 million on coupons for the converter boxes.

Late Wednesday night, as thousands of protesters re-lit a large bonfire in front of the Parliament, the Reykjavik chapter of the Progressive Party voted to recommend to the party's national representatives that they withdraw from the ruling coalition, and called for new elections in May 2009. As the night wore on, though, matters descended into violence. Around 1:30 am, police dispersed the crowd with tear gas, the first time tear gas had been used against Icelanders in 60 years. The crowd soon reformed and pelted riot police with stones. One officer was severely injured by a cobblestone, the newspaper Morgunbladid said.

While I understand your sentiment, it is we who will pay with our lives, not them.

And they do not care.
Personally, I am ready for another independence day, and I'm not at all afraid of what may come.

That kind of dependency on the government and unwillingness to take care of your own is exactly what the politicians want to hear.

Are you ready to go to New York (or LA, or and coast city) and inspect all the small boats coming in to see if they have suitcase nukes on board?

If that what it takes until a new, slim, efficient form of government is created, sure.

We need the government to change and shrink and become more efficient, but if it went away, your very life might literally be at risk - overnight.

Yeah, and the power-hungry politicians in DC will be more than willing to allow their base of power to shrink and become more efficient. The very lives of the Founding Fathers were at risk the day they signed the Declaration of Independence:

If you have a covert box will you be able to pull in local stations on digital? I am dumping sat TV and TV in general. Being able to access local TV in case of emergency might be worth keeping TV. I may also rent an occassional movie that does not have Hate America First liheral actors.

I’m with DTogo. Does anyone think our government does a good job of protecting us? Have you looked at the TSA lately? It’s a joke.

The only reason to have government is to protect us from criminals at home and from threats from outside our country. Unless we shrink government until that is all it does, it will continue to screw up everything it touches.
