Texas Sen. John Cornyn is leading an early charge against President Barack Obama, seeking to blunt the new administration's momentum in Congress while lighting the way for a GOP comeback in the next election.
"I think he has decided that the only chance Republicans have is to be very aggressive," political scientist Larry Sabato said of the Texan, who come to Washington six years ago as a defender of President George W. Bush.
Cornyn said the campaign committee role makes him a key player in the Senate GOP leadership as well as the architect of the partyâs Senate campaign in 2010.

Actually, you can cross out Cornyn (but do add Vitter). This is a senator who is all show and speaks out of 10,000 sides of his mouth at once (as I just told his office staff--again). Yes, he did get me to write congratulatory notes in the past when he SEEMED to speak for conservatives--and more recently when he SEEMED to block Clinton's confirmation. My fellow posters, we have to commit ourselves to frequent fussing (and praising if warranted) by phone and mail if we are to achieve a conservative comeback. Then, too, you can write a note in the comments section of a major newspaper, point out the media's lack of fair reporting (who knew about that twerp labor secretary calling for hiring non-white construction workers, for example, or about the admission Thursday that the proposed bailout bill could not name one job creation)?
Cornyn has hiw own political ambitions. Beware this wannabe emperor.

If Republicans want to fire up the rank and file, they need to expel McCain.
Yep. Rep. Zach Wamp (RINO) from the 3rd Congressional District of Tennessee came out this week on a local radio program in Chattanooga doing a mea culpa about his vote in the affirmative on the TARP funds. Despite overwhelming opposition amongst his constituents before the vote, he voted for the TARP bailout anyway. Typical Wamp fence riding. Now, he's having second thoughts since he's recently announced he intends to run for Governor of Tennessee in 2010.
Something tells me that we're going to see a lot more of these mea culpas in the coming weeks. I, for one, won't be fooled when the primaries come around in 2010. You either have conservative principles or you don't. There are no do-overs in my book.....particularly when your ill conceived vote cost the nation upwards of a trillion dollars that we don't have to spend...
“Cornyn said he put the hold on Holders confirmation to win a commitment that he would not press prosecutions against anyone who used harsh interrogation techniques during the Bush administration.
I guess he doesen’t care about all the Texans that will be furious when Holder starts pursuing his gun grabbin’ agenda!
The Republican Party desperately needs to win back the House of Representatives in 2010 and it can be done. Unseat the “Blue Dogs” and the House becomes Republican.
Rush Has it right ,we support the President we just dont support his policies
I have personally spoken to Sen Cornyn many times at work over the years and he meets about 90% of my conservative values !
He gets my vote based on his RECORD, not his promises.
Got the same BS letter from John on the bailout as well. Quite disappointing.
Even though I have, in the past 10 years voted and financially supported some in the GOP, like you I have done so as a non-party affiliated citizen.
And yes socialism lite is still socialism.

Exactly, there is no middle ground in being a Conservative, you either are one and stand by your Conservatism or you don't and are a RINO.
Cornyn will be a hero if he continues to challenge what the Demonrats are about to do to this country. We need brave souls like him to stand up to the lunacy and no matter the costs to have courage under fire. There is nothing more for the GOP to lose. It is the right thing to do and a light needs to be shone on the roaches that are the DNC and expose the disease they are to this country.
You’re right in that the Demonrats and the media/entertainers can own what is about to happen to this country. Everything they stand for is corrupt and wrong and hurts more people than helps and all they need do is be what they are. For so long they have won by default and let them just do what they do like they run their states into the ground and now our nation because they cannot help what they are. Look how bad Clintoon would have turned out had the GOP not saved him in ‘96. Clintoon should have been left to crash and burn then and the myth would have died then, but here we are and now let them prove what they are. The Demonrats can be called out for controlling federal and the majority of state govt’s. It’s up to opposition to make that clear this is what they get and have done to this country.
Good grief! After reading the first fifty posts, I am pissed to say the least. Instead of encouraging Sen. Cornyn in order to get others to follow suit, many are bent on doing the Democrats work by discouraging him. We don’t need a conservative litmus test for someone to oppose Obama. We need every willing and available man and woman. Get your heads out of your asses.
Good to see somebody standing tall.
Kudos to Cornyn

Exactly. And some went as far as calling Cornyn “socialist light” and claiming there is no difference between him and the Democrats — and all this in the name of “conservatism”. People like that are exactly the problem, they contributed to the Dems taking over Congress in 2006 and Obama’s election and the Dems’ gaining even fuller control of Congress in 2008. They are more interested in seeing Republicans defeated, who don’t meet their impossible litmus test, than to defeat the Democrats. They are constantly attacking Republicans, but don’t attack Democrats and fail to see (or this is just an excuse) that when Republicans are defeated, DEMOCRATS win.
The question is, does Cornyn make stands on principle, or is he just grandstanding as a tool to run for a higher office, eventually POTUS? IMO, he has some principle that align with true conservatives, but he also has a gleam in his eye. Maybe that goes with being in the senate.
The thought has crossed my mind that I would probably vote for Cornyn if he ran against BO in 2012. But last month he put a statement on his website that troubled me:
Maybe Cornyn has in mind a real solution including workplace enforcement, not a repeat of last year's shamnesty bill, which effectively gave illegals instant legal status with enforcement promises that few of us on FR believed. However, he should know that his choice of the phrase "immigration reform" is going to worry a lot of us.
I called his office last month when I saw the statement, and they assured me that I just misinterpreted what he wrote. We'll see. Have the Open Borders business interests in Texas and elsewhere gotten to him?
Great ad! lol.
Is there anyone available who can win and could guarantee that a better job would be done than Senator Cornyn is doing?
He has been a staunch conservative on many issues. I’d hate to lose him over one or two disagreements.
I don't recall posting he was 'socialist light' or any other derogatory remarks.
I just stated a fact. Every time we lose elections it is because those running are not running on a Conservative platform or ran on a Conservative platform in a prior election and then turned around and became RINO's when they reached D.C..
They need to wake up and smell the roses and stop listening (bending over and grabbing their ankles) to the MSM and the Democrats. We the voters are tired of their two faced games.
They really suck at combating black socialists.
The GOP en masse should refuse to give a single vote to support the SOCIALIST TAKEOVER OF THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT that happened on 1/20/09.
The GOP is no better than the POTUS MUZZIE HUSSEIN and the socialists running the country.
Every man for himself, this is not going to be solved by the ballot box or by WASHINGTON POLITICIANS.
