ACORN Could Get Billions from Democrats' Trillion Dollar Spending Plan "Job Creation" Bill Offers Taxpayer-Funded Bonanza for Organization Reportedly Under Federal Investigation

Washington, Jan 23 - The House Democrats’ trillion dollar spending bill, approved on January 21 by the Appropriations Committee and headed to the House floor next week for a vote, could open billions of taxpayer dollars to left-wing groups like the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN). ACORN has been accused of perpetrating voter registration fraud numerous times in the last several elections; is reportedly under federal investigation; and played a key role in the irresponsible schemes that caused a financial meltdown that has cost American taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars since last fall.

House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) and other Republicans are asking a simple question: what does this have to do with job creation? Are Congressional Democrats really going to borrow money from our children and grandchildren to give handouts to ACORN in the name of economic “stimulus?”

Incredibly, the Democrats’ bill makes groups like ACORN eligible for a $4.19 billion pot of money for “neighborhood stabilization activities.” Funds for this purpose were authorized in the Housing and Economic Recovery Act, signed into law in 2008. However, these funds were limited to state and local governments. Now House Democrats are taking the unprecedented step of making ACORN and other groups eligible for these funds:

“For a further additional amount for ‘Community Development Fund,’ $4,190,000,000, to be used for neighborhood stabilization activities related to emergency assistance for the redevelopment of abandoned and foreclosed homes as authorized under division B, title III of the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 (Public Law 110–289), of which—

“(1) not less than $3,440,000,000 shall be allocated by a competition for which eligible entities shall be States, units of general local government, and nonprofit entities or consortia of nonprofit entities[.]”

“(2) up to $750,000,000 shall be awarded by competition to nonprofit entities or consortia of nonprofit entities to provide community stabilization assistance […]”

The House Democrats’ trillion dollar spending bill also includes $1 billion for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program. CDBG funds are given by the federal government to state and local governments which often contract with nonprofits for services related to the purpose of the grant.

ACORN knows how to secure CDBG funds. Audit reports filed by ACORN’s headquarters with the Office of Management and Budget show that ACORN spent $1,588,599 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program funds from FY 2003 through FY 2007. It is not clear from these records when or from what source the funds were awarded to ACORN. It is also not clear whether ACORN chapters or affiliates have received CDBG grants on their own.

House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) repeatedly urged President George W. Bush and other federal officials to withhold taxpayer funds from ACORN, including $17.2 million in federal grants awarded in December 2008 after numerous allegations of wrongdoing in connection with ACORN’s election activities were reported by the news media.

Leader Boehner also released a study of federal records in October 2008 listing tens of millions in federal grants received by ACORN. A new updated and more expansive study reveals that ACORN has actually received millions more than first thought. A review of the Federal Register and news releases issued by federal agencies showed that ACORN was awarded more than $53 million in taxpayer dollars. This amount does not reflect the millions more ACORN has received in federal block grant funds awarded to state and local agencies which passed them on to ACORN.

The media and academia are the third leg of the stool (along with voter corruption ie ACORN, amnesty to illegals who will be entitlement voters) of why we won’t be regaining political power in the traditional way. We can’t beat them at this game, they’ve changed all the rules in their favor. All we can do is opt out of the system until we are strong enough to play a new game, after a time of waiting while they are weakened by our withdrawal. If even that can happen. As a Christian, IMO this may all just be the way it has to be, a trial run of the real thing.

If you haven’t yet read “Atlas Shrugged,” you should. Every American should know the book forwards and backwards. John Galt had the answers. We may not be able to live in exile, but we can certainly make things very unpleasant for our new Overlords.

I read it years ago as a teen, but had forgotten almost all of it so am re-reading it now :) That’s kind of the thing in the back of my mind, though we don’t have hologram shields to hide our town yet, LOL. I love remote Appalachia, and feel it would be almost ideal for my family-later, my extended family, siblings with spouses and children-to just get out of the way and watch the chaos from a distance. And live in such a way as to keep our exchanges with the larger economy at a minimum.

“We will be put out of power by the legalization of illegal aliens and voted out by people who pay zero taxes who are near majority now. Who all voted Democrat.”

It really is time for Atlas to shrug.

The only flaw in your logic is that loads of taxpaying voters voted for Xero. They did it because they were angry, leftist, whatever, but it far and away tipped the balance. The welfare deadbeats "vote" of course (thanks to Acorn) but even with that fraud, that's not nearly enough votes.

This ACORN spending is in the original bill. Billions more could go to them through congressional added pork projections and allotments. Many Dims are chomping at the ability to add all sorts of goodies to this stimulus bill.

I won't disagree for this time around but it is common knowledge that "zero tax payers" are reaching 50% of the electorate and that they will vote for those who want to "tax the rich" as a solution to this nations problems and their own. And for demagogues who play the race card ...such as 0

“If that happns its all over with. Elections will be just a formality just like the elections in the Soviet Union or North Korea etc. We will be just another totalitarian state.”

A totalitarian state on its way to third world status.

The first is true, the second is not. The second assumption assumes that they are a monolithic combination of the greedy and the leftist, but that is far from true. The second assumption also doesn't account for the fact that the rolls of taxpayers versus nontaxpayers changes somewhat from year to year.

The steady trend is upward and the Democrat/0bama scheme is to via broader non-taxation policies to increase them.... Their natural voting bloc. The only hope conservatives have is to hope they are too lazy to vote. My own anecdotal experience is they were not too lazy to vote for 0. 0 mobilized them. I saw this mob lined up for hours long waits outside the library in our ten days of pre-voting. The lines were so long the libraries were shut down for the regular patrons so the mob could wait inside to vote. Out of the rain

I think you are still assuming more overlap between the 50% nontaxpayer demographic and the leftist mobs that you saw than actually exists. There was a coalition of leftist mob, nontaxpayers and non-mob taxpayers who gave Xero 53% of the vote. That included taxpayers who were mad at Bush, taxpayers who were swayed by Xero's $700M worth of advertising and arm twisting and a good number of taxpayers who thought McCain was completely worthless.

We are not going to count on the laziness of Obama's leftist mob. If anything Obama and the radical Dems in Congress will send money to Acorn to make sure they "vote" no matter how lazy they are. What we are going to count on is the conservative tendencies of some of those nontaxpayers (e.g. elderly, rural unemployed, farmers having a bad year) along with a conservative appeal to the taxpayers who crossed over.

OK .... You are probably correct
All I have to say is that if you want to blame someone for the America people tilting towards socialist solutions then you should blame the anarchists on Wall St with their bundled mortgages rackets and their credit default swap rackets. I blame them 70% and the hacks in DC 30%. By hacks I especially mean Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Franklin Raines and others who ran Fanny/Freddy. Plus those who repealed Glass Steagall meaning Bob Rubin, Larry Summers, Phil Gramm (the biggest libertarian money grubber ever)

When our capitalist system fails the American people they turn to socialist solutions
