We can just depend on them to protect us...
Wouldn’t it be wiser to just stop paying them?
LOL,
How do you keep a super power from sinking your navy??
I read about the buildup of China’s maritime in 1985. This shouldn’t be anything new to our Government.
Perhaps we’ve ignored them too long.
That’s all good and fine, and if Obama wants a bigger navy, I’ll certainly support him (obviously, I’m not holding my breath).
However, I will not SUCK UP to Obama as Mr. Kristol seems to be doing, and I will no longer read his trash.
Modern ships are hideously expensive. I love ‘em and I wish we would build more. But I fully expect Obama to cut very deeply on the navy side.
While not to make light of the threat (never underestimate your enemy); building a bigger navy is not the same as operating one. Add operational experience on top of your build time, even considering the fact that past (publicly available) lessons are readily available; there’s still time to get the socialist out of Washington. But not much.
Need to:
1. Aggressively accelerate development of carrier-based UAV usage —modern carrier aircraft have legs that are only somewhat longer than what they were in WW2.
2. Accelerate ABM, DE programs on maaaaany Navy ships
I also think china will also come out with an countership ICBM.
I hate to tell you what I THOUGHT this column was titled.
For a min there....
I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for a bigger navy. Obama will probably sell off what we have as scrap metal to China so they can build even more.
Obama’s rational? China can protect us...
Funny, I thought that "the question is not whether you have an aircraft carrier, but how you defend your aircraft carrier."
Without sophisticated missile defense and long-range radar, an aircraft carrier is a sitting duck.
Stimulus I can believe in . . .
No Biofuels Bailout - Farm energy pork wastes money and harms the environment
Al Qaeda bungles arms experiment - Biological or chemical weapons
It's time to pray for global warming, says Flint Journal columnist John Tomlinson I linked 4 GW threads.
Some noteworthy articles about politics, foreign and military affairs, IMHO, FReepmail me if you want on or off my list.
Our navy is larger than the next several largest navies combined... and China's is not among the top ten... and China's navy is not tooling up for a fight against US ships in open waters.
I think we might avoid obeying short-sighted headline-logic before committing billions unnecessarily.

Thanks neverdem. I guess this might explain why I saw an article on Xinhua, titled something like, “China won’t seek world hegemony”.
