Been tracking this pretty extensively since avbout 2000 on the above site.
Our Navy has been downsizing sinificantly until about the last two years when we have started to actually produce more ships now than we are decomissioning. We got down to about 220 major surface combattants and are now up to 226...on our way to 250-280 in the next ten years.
Red China has more than doubled their fleet in the same time frame and continues to grow, with new, modern combatants. In 1997 they were 25 years behind us. Now they are nearing parity in many areas and continuing to grow. Sooner or later they will confront us.
I have little hope that Obama is going to address this in any significant way.
