The year 2008 tied with 2001 as the eighth warmest year on record for the Earth, based on the combined average of worldwide land and ocean surface temperatures through December, according to a preliminary analysis by NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C. For December alone, the month also ranked as the eighth warmest globally, for the combined land and ocean surface temperature. The assessment is based on records dating back to 1880.
The analyses in NCDC’s global reports are based on preliminary data, which are subject to revision. Additional quality control is applied to the data when late reports are received several weeks after the end of the month and as increased scientific methods improve NCDC’s processing algorithms.
NCDC’s ranking of 2008 as the eighth warmest year compares to a ranking of ninth warmest based on an analysis by NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies. The NOAA and NASA analyses differ slightly in methodology, but both use data from NOAA's National Climatic Data Center – the federal government's official source for climate data.

Probably just more junk science where they use July and August temperatures to fill in for November and December so they would have these figures ready for Obama’s Inaugural Extravaganzaa. What a crock!

informed Obama that he has four years to save the world from global warming as polar ice is melting and oceans will flood the earth.
Zer0bamessiah will have four years in which to run for re-election. His RAT party is proposing to rescind the 22nd Amendment so the zer0bamessiah can be KING for life.

"Additional quality control is applied to the data"
they will tweak until they get the result they want....
I also highly doubt any accurate measure of ocean temperatures existed or was carried out over a hundred years ago..
as Glenn Beck says....."common sense"...and my common sense as well as my thermometer tells me that we had at least 3 -10F temps overnight in December and the heaviest record snowfall.....

It's called "proxying in data". When hansen dropped South American and Africa he proxied in data from other areas at the same latitudes.
Those areas would be India, Australia, various islands, and, of course, the OCEAN.
I'm sure Ocean temps are a good proxy for land temps./s

Let me decode that for you: it’s still getting colder, but we can’t admit it.

"The PHD Grantees will, starting in 2012, reimburse the government 5% percent annually by seeking honest work, such as teaching -at least 14 hours per week." Why on earth would you want any of these envirowacko's teaching their BS to the upcoming generations?

You're just wasting time and trouble posting pertinent scientific data, ETL. Everybody in Foggy Bottom and Universities across this great land knows that Global Warming is directly related to the length of chipmunk tails, shark attacks and the price of a barrel of oil on Brent on Monday morning.
The increase in any one of these factors reflects the seriousness of the problem.
And before you scoff at this as frivolity, we do have specialists who examine chipmunk tails with enthusiasm.
Now, on to the recent discovery of the combustibility of bovine flatulence.....
