Congress is mulling a proposal to pay people to get rid of those old gas guzzlers sitting in their driveways.
Under legislation introduced Wednesday in both the House and Senate and called the "Cash for Clunkers" program, drivers could get vouchers of up to $4,500 when they turn in their old fuel-inefficient vehicles for scrapping and buy vehicles that get good gas mileage.
People could also turn in their old cars for vouchers that could be used to ride public buses and trains.
The bill, said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., "would be an important part of helping getting America's struggling automobile industry back on its feet, and help consumers who are concerned about covering the cost of buying a more fuel-efficient vehicle."
Taking gas guzzlers off the road, added Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, a co-sponsor, "would reduce our dependence on foreign oil, decrease greenhouse gas emissions and stimulate the economy."
The bill envisions the program operating for four years and encouraging the retirement of up to one million vehicles a year, saving between 40,000 and 80,000 barrels of motor fuel a day by the end of the fourth year.
Drivers would be eligible for reimbursement for purchase of a new or used vehicle with a fuel economy rating that exceeds federal targets for that class of vehicle by at least 25 percent. The vehicle must have a manufacturer suggested retail price of less than $45,000 and be a model year 2004 or later.
The vehicles turned in must be drivable, registered in the United States and have a when-new fuel economy rating of less than 18 miles per gallon.

So you want a new Mercedes. Go to the slum in your town, buy a 1976 Ford Maverick for $400 that nobody’s using. Trade that in for the government’s $4,500 trade in.
You come out $4,100 richer.

Oh I see...so I’ll get $2-3k for a car that’s already paid off so I can saddle myself with a new auto loan for 6-10 times that amount. Let’s see who wins here: Congress, check. Auto makers, check. Dealers, check, Banks, check. Enviro-lobby, check. Consumer....bzzzzzt. Oh so close.
Ugh... I really wish all of these losers who bought vehicles, houses and other things they could not afford would just commit suicide already. Please, go jump off a cliff, shoot yourself, poison yourself. Do whatever you have to do to remove yourself from this society as you're nothing but a worthless drain on the rest of us who are trying to live within our means!
If you can afford to drive an SUV, by all means, do it... It's no one's business but your own how you choose to spend your money, but I am so sick of everyone who chooses to live large when they know they cannot afford it whining for a bailout.

This would apply only to mentally defectives, those with Down’s Syndrome, Autism and the like. Those whose lives are deemed to be to costly to continue as the investment will not provide a meaningful return. The elderly, over 70, 80, 90? Who knows?
Those who breathe too much contributing more CO2 than they should.
This will all be done “For the Greater Good”. This will be done in the name of science and called a social program.
It will be hailed by intellectuals of the scientific community, the leaders of the business community, authors, poets and entertainers.
Research will be supported by major corporations and they spend enormous sums of money advertising the truth of this brave and bold new path.

Lets confiscate and sell on Ebay all the crack these clowns have been smoking, that should put a dent in the deficit.
It just a few years ago that the ‘government’ was giving tax breaks to buy vehicles over 6,000 pounds!
Business Purchase SUV Tax Credit
The tax break is for up to $25,000 for purchase of a vehicle for business purposes that weighs over 6,000 lbs. The intent was to get small businesses to make capital purchases faster than three years allowed under depreciation. However, because the law specified the weight but not the purpose, any yahoo buying an SUV could argue for the tax break. Obviously, the bigger the price tag, the more the rebate—someone buying a Jeep Commando got way less than someone buying a full-featured Hummer.

It doesn’t make any difference. If you don’t want to turn in the vehicle, they will up the license fee so you can’t afford to drive it. Ain’t socialism great?
The Washington GOP is up to its eyeballs in this latest bit of nonsensical socialism, right along with the Democrats. Do note that the article was mailed out by GOPusa, and it quotes a RINO co-sponsor of the bill.
One thing this election has done is expose a ton of RINOs. You cannot tell the two parties apart in Washington right now. Beginning in the 2010 primaries, we need to concentrate on voting out virtually every GOP incumbent.
