NURSES are being banned from parking at the Infirmary in a bid to encourage them to use public transport.
Dozens of staff at the hospital are furious after being told by bosses that their £14-a-month parking permits would not be renewed as they could walk or cycle to work.
A senior member of staff described the move as insulting and ridiculous and said it would be impossible for many of her colleagues as they live miles away.
The affected workers were told of the decision in a letter from Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. They were informed that, due to a limited availability of parking spaces, their need was not deemed sufficient enough to warrant a permit being issued.
One staff member, who asked not to be named, told the Observer: "Many workers have had these permits for years and all members of staff, who currently have parking permits, were asked to complete applications for renewal. Staff living in Whitworth, Littleborough and other areas have been told they can walk, cycle or take the bus to work. Staff, including those in their late 50s, are not going to cycle on dangerous main roads. They are not going to walk for over an hour to the hospital, work a busy shift and walk home again in all weathers, possibly in the dark and late at night. Some members of staff also have to travel between all four hospital sites, how are they expected to do this without a car? Personal safety is a huge concern in all of this."
A Trust spokesman said: "Our transport and access strategy sees us suggest and promote green travel options for staff, patients and visitors alike. We try particularly hard to promote public transport but many people do continue to opt to use their cars, so we have to manage that issue in a fair way. To help with this, we are introducing a new vehicle parking policy to manage parking more effectively, make better use of spaces, improve enforcement and reduce demand. We have also introduced shuttle services between the Royal Oldham Hospital and North Manchester General Hospital and the Royal Oldham Hospital to Fairfield General Hospital, to reduce the number of journeys staff need to make in their own vehicles between sites."
Obviously some of us have to work on our attitudes.
How fast can you turn a Government-Single-Payer Healthcare-Socialist, into a Libertarian-Conservative?
This is a sorry predicament. However Nurses are a profession which is much in demand. Therefore if enough of them get a job somewhere else, this policy could backfire for the Clinic or Hospital.
I wonder if this affects the doctors and the Chief Operating Officer.
Let them eat cake I guess.
WHEN THE GOVERNMENT GIVES IT CAN TAKE AWAY, TO SUIT THE LATEST TRENDY POLICIES OF THE NUTCASES (LIKE GLOBAL WARMING)
Right outta Atlas Shrugged. We'll never hear about Part II -- the vandalizing of the cars that got awarded the parking permits. People really cop an attitude when they are told that someone else's need is more important than their own.
The US is always looking for good nurses, come on over.
March... you swine! Don't you know that the road to Utopia can only be taken on foot!
The same stupid idea will try and probably succeed to a point on a wider scale here. There are plenty of people out there who just live to tell others what to do.
I’d love to see someone cycling to work this morning in my neck of the woods.......-5 F
Sometimes it seems that we’re living in a world that’s been co-authored by Ayn Rand and Joseph Heller!

Er, are these unionized nurses?
I think they know what to do.
I commute 65 miles one way to work and am confident that the Gub’ment will soon tell me where to live. I will quit my job before I move to the city or anyplace close to it. On the brighter side I will end up paying less of the HUGE tax hikes coming our way.
Trust me...the liberal bean counters aka government suckups running the place won’t walk.
For a couple more days, I will be commuting downtown. Next week, a week of last vacation, and then start my new job (away from this looney bin) just outside the city limits.
I would say that MOST (approaching 100%) of those that support socialized medicine have the attitude that
I’ll get mine for free, in the quantities that I want, and someone else will pay for it.
