President George W. Bush will give a farewell address to the nation Thursday night, billed by the administration as a chance to reflect on his tenure and welcome Barack Obama without fighting old battles one last time.

Bush will deliver the speech, expected to run 10 to 15 minutes, from the ornate East Room of the White House. He will have a small audience of people in the room, chosen for their stories of personal courage.

White House press secretary Dana Perino said Monday that Bush will "uphold the tradition of presidents using farewell addresses to look forward — ....

*snip*

Perino said the speech will be the last scheduled public event for Bush as president until he appears on the North Portico to greet Obama on Inauguration Day, which is Jan. 20.

Best War President Ever. We can never repay you for the abuse you have taken from all sides. Thank you Mr President.

I don't know how old you are, but I have a piece of advice for you from someone who has watched politics since the early 60's.

The fact is that you will NEVER get a president who agrees with you on everything. Never. If you expect that, you might as well find yourself another interest other than politics, and you will be a happier person.

George Bush did many conservative things: supported the military, prosecuted the war, lowered taxes, killed Kyoto, stood up for pro-life policies, appointed two great justices to the Supreme Court, promoted free trade, stood up for freedom.

The things he was NOT conservative on (No CHild Left Behind, immigration, Medicare prescription drugs) he CAMPAIGNED ON IN 2000. If these things were so terrible to you, you should have voted for Gore.

I don't know if ANY Republican can bypass the media. People are griping that he should have spoken out more; well, I don't know that it would have done any good, given the media's tendency to IGNORE him when it didn't suit him. Even getting Tony Snow as press secretary didn't help, and Tony was about as media-savvy as one could have wished.

Well, you can dance a jig at his leaving. For myself, I will always be proud I supported him and continued to support him through his last days in office. He will be judged as a great president, although it might take 50-100 years for historians to get an objective judgement.

a failure to find that veto pen that went all the way back to his first term, the failure to secure our borders,

The veto thingy (borrowing from his dad) bothered me to no end. But, the border thingy (in spite of an attack on our soil) still agravates. Somebody needed a flashlight to find all those 'points of light' streaming across the border but must have been out of batteries.

Hey, I'm all for more nuclear energy in this country, I just don't want it coming here in parts carried by coyotes.

GWB will be spoken of in the same breath as our 13th and 14th Presidents, no question.

If you’re ungrateful now, I predict you’ll be downright surly after 4-8 years of President Obama-lama-ding-dong and his Cabinet of Clintonistas, his Party of Corruption and his Principles of Uber-liberalism.

Arthur, Bush never pretended to be a "great communicator." As The Anchoress said one time, since we know he isn't a great communicator, why didn't some people step up to help him? The only one I know who did so was Tony Snow, God rest his soul.

When people aren't good at something but are in a position of responsibility, the normal thing to do is to step in and offer help. Who on our side did this? Other than Tony Snow, no one.

When FDR was in a wheel chair, the media covered up for him and democrats in Congress stood behind him and made him seem like a genius. When Bill Clinton was impeached for his lying about his relationship with Monica Lewinsky, the democrats all stood behind him. Yet President Bush, whose only fault is his lack of media savvy, got no help from his own side but instead criticism for not being a media genius.

This is not the way we should support our people. President Bush had many good traits, including honesty, courage, honor, perseverence, and love of God. Yet you are willing to throw him over the side because he wasn't good with the media. For shame.

GET LOST. B.S. He "kept us safe". Ask the families of the dead.

-from life long conservative, probably registered to vote Republican longer that "W" himself....

Does the 4,000 plus Americans killed, your fellow citizens, on our very soil, still mean “he kept us safe?” Yes or no? Are you uncomfortable with this historic reality?

good to see you MM, President Bush was villified for eight years, and this takes its toll.

Just look at how many people believe that the Tina Fey impersonation of Palin as a twit is accurate. She nailed the mannerisms (just like they did with Bush) and made up the words...

With an even-handed media, Bush would have had a chance...

Is there any doubt why no decent conservatives want to subject themselves to become citizen-politicians?

It isn’t worth it, even your own turn on you in large numbers...

And you need to be perfect, and not even have things that the media can make up about you...

We deserve the government we get...

The fact is that you will NEVER get a president who agrees with you on everything.

Excuse me, but this seems like so much boiler-plate excusism. It't too often used to lessen expectations.

McCain wouldn't have even been close to what conservatives really needed/wanted this year, but he got the nod. How's that? Palin isn't the greatest when it comes to all things conservative but she's got the heart, and that's a start. Her heart is in the right place (thanks to rugged, individualistic, Alaskans).

Basically, the guy or gal who leads conservatives has to know the difference between more government or less government in your personal life. If they can't get this right- dump 'em. (I personally use the 2nd ammendment test- they waffle, I flush- twice, 'cause it's a long way to Washington D.C.)

"Screw with my guns, you're done." It's so simple, cures all rino induced ills.

What is your take on the 4,000 plus Americans who lost their lives to people illegally on our soil because of a porous border policy that could have been solved in 1-2 years out of the entire eight years of President Bush? Or is that just the Democrats in Congress who deserve to take responsibility.
