President-elect Barack Obama is preparing to issue an executive order his first week in office -- and perhaps his first day -- to close the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, according to two presidential transition team advisers.
It's unlikely the detention facility at the Navy base in Cuba will be closed anytime soon. In an interview last weekend, Obama said it would be "a challenge" to close it even within the first 100 days of his administration.
But the order, which one adviser said could be issued as early as Jan. 20, would start the process of deciding what to do with the estimated 250 Al Qaeda and Taliban suspects and potential witnesses who are being held there. Most have not been charged with a crime.

watched 24 for the first time ;last night and thought to myself that I hope some in the FBI,CIA are going to be investigating and keeping info away from zero and his cronies like Ayers, nation of islam, black panthers, commie groups, move on..org etc etc etc.
I trust zero as far as I can throw him,
I really believe classified info will be leaked out to zero’s cronies and that the likes of the nation of islam will be tipped off if their is an investigation into them.
maybe I am alone but I really believe that this country never did vote for obama to have him win.
I think there was a lot of fraudulent votes to have swing ed the swing states to him.
course there is also the question of millions upon millions in illegal money and the media.
No I have no faith that the GOP will ban those illegal credit cards over the next 4 years and yes I think they will moan about those credit cards in 4 years even though they never did anything about them
maybe they’ll join his national civilian security force.
still waiting for the media to actually ask dumbo what this force is supposed to do.
Yep, my sentiments exactly. I’ve been mourning since Nov.4th.
Because of the way our enemy thinks, we are tacitly less safe with this idiotic move by Obama, no matter what is done with the Guantanamo prisoners.
I guess the liberal mind believes that this action will cause the enemy to see that we have heart, we are not evil, and thus they will not attack us, but that will prove to be so wrong. If you'll read some of the jihadi sites, you'll see that, even though the rest of the world sees our actions in Afghanistan and Iraq as defensive, if not altruistic, the jihadis see our every move there as punitive and retaliatory. I'm telling you, these people don't think like we do, and thus this move by Obama is a huge mistake.
Gitmo is run better, has better security, food, and living conditions than most public schools and Americans get...yet it has been twisted by the far left into some torture chamber.
Hilarious...I am sure there are some Bondage and S&M chambers in San Francisco that are 1,000,000 times worse on humans than Gitmo.
Democrat congress-people and other liberal lawyers who pity the terrorists at Gitmo deserve to have them released into a half-way house near where they live in Georgetown.
I would recommend the basement of the White House. The Muslim in the White House should enjoy having his brothers and allies close by.
I thought he said something about “there is only one president at a time” when asked about hard issues?
The politics of this issue are that Obama has good political cover for the move because Secretary of Defense Gates of the current Bush administration has spoken publically about his desire to close Guantanamo since he was in confirmation hearings years ago. The following is from 2007: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6508779.stm
He spews that BS when he gets tough questions as Rush illustrated.
House them in Washington DC.
Ah, yes, he’s going to issue an executive order to shut down Gitmo, eventually, like sometime when it isn’t needed anymore.
This is just another present vote to make it look like he is keeping his campaign promise.
At that point, they all belong to Obama. Every bad act they participate in will be Obama's.
Huh? What?
[scratching my head]
I think alone is not quite the word ...
I think there was a lot of fraudulent votes to have swing ed the swing states to him.
I believe voter fraud exists every year ... but denying the fact the media was able to brain-wash average idiot Americans into voting for Obama is naive and dangerous.
course there is also the question of millions upon millions in illegal money and the media.
I was under the impression the credit card donations were legal as there was no actual law in place that did not allow it as long as the donations were relatively low ($100 and below or something like that???). I'm sure there was lots of illegal donations from unsuitable donors, but donating via credit cards itself is not illegal.
Of coarse if you want to make a real issue, why not bring up the fact Obama promised to use public campaign funds and then backed out; McCain promised to use them and continued to use them, giving himself a horrible disadvantage.
I have no faith that the GOP will ban those illegal credit cards over the next 4
If they need to be banned, how are they illegal? If they were already illegal, they would be banned ...
Instead of another campaign financing issue which will not gain any traction, why don't we just start using that practice.
How many GOP supporters would love to donate, but can't afford to because of no actual cash on hand but have the assets to donate... using credit cards could help us raise more funds.
Some sort of regulation is needed ... but trying to get rid of this practice all together is not a good idea IMO; every time the GOP tries to do something involving campaign financing, it always puts us at a disadvantage ...
This is just another present vote to make it look like he is keeping his campaign promise.
IMO this is what it looks like so far as well. I think once you start to get intelligence briefings and such, your whole outlook on certain issues becomes blurred ...
Obama obviously had no idea that amount of issues and threats he was going to deal with ... He got in over his head IMO.
If Obama does indeed close down Gitmo upon his first 5 days in office ...
Well stupid is as stupid does ...
He explained his position to Stephanopolous on Sunday. He said, exactly what you said, that after looking at the issue more closely he sees that there is an awful lot involved with it, like the fact that no one wants these prisoners and it will take a long time to figure out what to do with them.
Obama wasn’t interested in the WOT, torture, or any foreign policy issue, and he didn’t really know much about any of it. All Obama was interested in was getting power, power to change the system from capitalism to socialism. He used everyone, every special interest group, every minority, for just that purpose. Some of those groups aren’t going to get what they want and some of them aren’t going to like what they get.
I think that some of those groups aren’t even going to like what they’ve been asking for.
good correction and no I am not being sarc
I should have said that the GOP needs to ban these pre paid credit cards .
They are legal as no law is saying that they cannot be used but I do wonder how much came in from Soros and Buffet to name two. Then the question is how much came from overseas
Their being pardoned & he’s not in office yet.
