Vandals struck four Chicago-area synagogues early Saturday morning, shattering glass doors and windows with bricks and rocks and spray-painting anti-Israel graffiti.
The caretakers at Lincolnwood Jewish Congregation in the normally quiet village of Lincolnwood just outside Chicago woke up to the sound of shattering glass and saw two adults running through the synagogue's parking lot in ski masks. Four bricks were thrown through the building's front doors, but the vandals were unable to gain entry.
"Death to Israel Free Palestine," was the message left behind on the walls in bright orange spray paint.
Similar incidents occurred around the same time not far away at three synagogues and schools in Chicago's West Rogers Park, a neighborhood dominated by Orthodox Jews. Two windows were shattered at Young Israel of West Rogers Park, "Death to Israel" was spray-painted on the wall of Congregation Anshe Motele and rocks broke a glass window at the Lubavitch Mesivta school.
Lubavitch Mesivta's Rabbi Moshe Perlstein told the Chicago Sun-Times that cameras captured video of the men damaging his school at around 4:40 a.m. The footage shows one man spray-painting the side of the building while the other ran around to the front and threw rocks at the front door, breaking a glass window, he said. The video has been turned over to police.
Lincolnwood and Chicago police and the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force will check whether there was a connection between Saturday's incidents and the December 29 throwing of a Molotov cocktail into Temple Sholom, one of Chicago's oldest and most ornate synagogues, in the Lakeview neighborhood.
The city's Ida Crown Jewish Academy high school received a mailed bomb threat two weeks ago that warned of attacks at other Chicago-area Jewish institutions, including day schools.
A pro-Israel rally was held at Lincolnwood Jewish Congregation on Sunday afternoon to respond to the spate of hate crimes and support Operation Cast Lead in the Gaza Strip. The synagogue's rabbi, Joel Lehrfield, called the perpetrators of the hate crime "cowardly thugs who support Hamas."
"We're more worried about Israel than we are about ourselves," Lehrfield said.
Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago executive vice president Michael Kotzin said it was ironic that he was on a solidarity mission in southern Israel when he heard about the attacks back home.
"I wouldn't say that we're in the front lines in Chicago like here, but there are people who are hostile to and hate Jews here and there, and we have to address it," Kotzin said. "It's important that law enforcement takes it seriously. But we won't be frightened or intimidated, just like the people of Israel. Their behavior strengthens us."
Whole lot os stupids out there.
While I'd agree with you about gun rights, I don't think it's an issue here. Middle of the night vandalism would be deterred by the simple presence of a watchman. And these attacks happen in Florida, a long time concealed carry state. And I've no doubt vandalism occurs in Texas. A better deterrent would be serious criminal charges, which won't happen in Chicago. If you recall our Pres to be opposed felony charges for a youth committing his SECOND violent felony, having gotten a pass on the first youthful indescretion.
Relative to arms, a better example would be the violent attacks, which I fear will escalate. Compare the attack on the community center in Seattle, 1 dead Jew, four wounded, a sane Muslim perp who admits it was a crime directed at Jews, and a jury that refused to convict. On anything. To the LA El Al attack. 1 (2?-I think 2nd survived) dead passenger, 1 dead perp. A much better outcome, because armed security was on the scene. And a competent, armed civilian would have sufficed.
You don't have to, and you're not alone, you and others who share your fascist mindset earn my utter contempt.
Why assume that muslims did this? Vandalizing synagogues has been a favorite passtime for some Americans for decades, long before there were any muslims here.
While he would no doubt be in favor of felony charges for an ordinary law-abiding citizen who shot one of these feral youths in self defense. Agree?
Every Jew, everywhere, should lawfully purchase a firearm, obtain a concealed-carry license, and learn how to use it, and where it's not legal, they should stop opposing decriminalization of armed self-defense.
I think that's irrelevant.
Well I think it's spot-on. This is just the beginning.

Where is all the anti-Muslim vandalism? What, no bricks thrown through the local Islamic Center saying “Death to Palestine, Free Israel”?
Not that I advocate violence, I just keep hearing that the Jews and Americans are no better than the terrorists.
The Obama Legacy Part One..
How many Palestinians does it take to change a lightbulb? None! They will sit in the darkness and blame it on the Jews..
Thank you. I will gladly accept the label from someone who obviously rejects what Israel stands for. I only hope Likud, and Bibi Netanyaho wins the upcoming election and will protect Israel instead of giving away land. Land for peace has not worked but I presume you believe it still might.
It's ironic, American Christians stand with Israel all she stands for, while American Jews do not.
Again, I'll acknowledge your pleasure at the vandalism and firebombing of Synagogues here in Chicago.
As to your characterization of me as just another Jew who rejects Israel, you're not the first idiot I've conversed with on FR. If you're going to make charges like that you have to grow a set and back them up. Factually, not with some one liner like a vandal streaking by in the night.
This isn't about Obama, it's about the acceptance of anti-religious violence as an advocacy device, no different than the gay attacks on Catholics and Mormons. While I perceive it to be more acceptable on the left, it's not a political issue and should be opposed across the board.
Yes, it is all part of the Obamanite attack on non TROP religions. For a few decades, the popular culture has insideously created this situation.
He certainly come from this enviornment, he attended a racist Church for years, and is comfortable associating with racists, Jewhaters and terrorists, it's reasonable to assume he'd oppose, however these Synagogue attacks aren't attributable to Obama, and would have happened had McCain won, or had Obama still been a nondescript State Senator. At this point he's irrelevant to what are criminal, possibly terrorist related, crimes. If he calls the investigation off next week, the Feds are involved, then there's a basis for criticism, but I doubt that will happen. And I know you wouldn't do it, but ignoring or condoning incidents like this as has been done on several threads because Jews voted for Obama doesn't make any friends for the GOP.
Most of the Jews voting for Obama have a type of Stockholm Syndrome, particularly in large urban centers..
Which is completely irrelevant relative to criminal activity and law enforcement. The attempted fire bombing of a Reform Synagogue, probably majority Obama voters, in Chicago New Years weekend is a crime, as are the attacks on the four Orthodox Synagogues/Schools, probably McCain voters, the article is discussing. Same with the disruption of the New York wedding, I haven't a clue if the family and guests were Orthodox, probably McCain, or Reform, probably Obama voters, nor does it matter.
