In a televised speech on Saturday, Khaled Meshaal, the Hamas leader, said Israel's offensive on Gaza, had failed because Hamas was still firing rockets at Israel.

"You have finished off the last chance and breath for settlement and negotiations," Meshaal said.

"Has it stopped the rockets?" he asked of Israel's declared aim in launching the offensive.

Meshaal said that Israel was covering up the true nature of its losses by saying that troops had been killed by friendly fire and accidents.

Meshaal said that any international monitoring force in the Gaza strip would be treated as "occupation" force.

And, Israel needs to continue the battle until Hamas is completely destroyed. Stopping before that and hoping for peace with Hamas, or even a truce, is just looking to repeat the same mistakes of the past number of times where the Palestinians have abused all peace offers or accords or treaties.

To stop before Israel has destroyed Hamas, is the same as repeating the same idiotic mistakes of the past in the hope of a different outcome. Peace with Hamas is no peace at all. Hamas' intent is to continue with the harassment and the bombing of Israel and the terrorism in the hope of wearing out the Israel residents and leadership. Hamas knows they can't win an all-out war. But, wearing out the Israelis and hoping that they'll give up and start evacuating what Hamas calls the "Palestinian homeland" is all they could hope for. Israel cannot stop until all of Hamas is destroyed or moved out of Gaza and the West Bank.
