WASHINGTON The Supreme Court served notice Friday that it may make a far-reaching change in civil rights law in 2009 and knock down a pair of long-standing rules that give special protection to minorities in the workplace and the voting booth.
The justices, after meeting privately, announced they had voted to hear two cases that concern the lingering role of race in American life. The cases could put the court on a collision course with the new administration of President-elect Barack Obama.
One of them arose when a Connecticut city, seeking to maintain diversity in its fire department, scrapped a civil-service test after it became clear that white firefighters had the best scores. This would have meant nearly all the promotions would have gone to whites, not blacks.
The white firefighters sued and said they had been victims of "race politics" in the New Haven city government. They urged the justices to rule that the Constitution and federal civil rights law require employers to use a "race-neutral selection process."
In ruling against the white applicants, lower-court judges said employers had a duty to avoid tests or standards that would leave minorities at a disadvantage.

“In ruling against the white applicants, lower-court judges said employers had a duty to avoid tests or standards that would leave minorities at a disadvantage.”
We must judge them by the color of their skin, not the content of their character?
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....
Oh yeah, because when lives are at stake, it’s much more important that the firefighters be “diverse” rather than competent /s
It would make it harder for incompetent minorities to obtain jobs or promotions.
How can they just “get together” and make such a decision? Aren’t they supposed to make rulings on the cases before them and forget about “the big picture?”
The writer is an outright racist. Read this sentence:
“It could give the Roberts court a chance to rule that civil rights laws require employers to follow an equal-treatment rule in hiring and promotions. Such a ruling could affect private employers and public agencies nationwide and make it harder for minorities to obtain jobs or promotions.”
Apparently the writer thinks that “minorities” don’t have the work ethic or intelligence to obtain jobs and promotions. What a bigot. If someone wants to pass a test, study hard and try your best. Just more proof that the last remaining vestiges of bigotry and race hatred lie squarely with the left.
Man, the spin in that story made me dizzy. Maybe we need a new topic flag called a “dramamine alert”.
What the article means is that the members of the court have met and decided to hear these cases.
The cases have not been presented to the court yet.
If the test is racist, it would have to ask questions that only white people know the answer to, like what is a Hootenanny?
Wonderfully spoken!
It is certainly about time that court-santioned racial quotas were jettisoned from American society. I cannot think of anything more damaging to race relations than the institutionalization of the notion that blacks are inherently inferior to whites and therefore require special “help” from white liberals (as well as assorted black race hustlers, of course) to make something of themselves.
The New Haven case involves the guy who sued me for assault after a Freep of LIEberman in the 2000 election fiasco

In Connecticut, Minority chiodren cant do good in school unless they are sitting next to little white kids

What pejorative do you imagine these white firefighters are spitting in the privacy of their own homes?
Exactly. They shouldn't be deciding anything or creating an agenda.
It's only right. We've dumbed down education to accommodate minorities, how can it be fair to expect them to know how to even take a test. Seriously, the only people who think this is right believe whites are superior.
I recall about 25 years ago when the base paper wanted to do a story on our Radar Squadron. When they came into the back where the work was being done they removed me from my work and had the “new girl” sit where I was on a “fancy” mode 4 test system for photos. The PC covers all.
Whatever it is, I could hardly blame them, after such a blatant display of stupidity and racism, at the possible risk to lives. Especially when firefighters have to put so much on the line for others.
I’ve always suspected as much when I see those kinds of pictures, unless the person pictured is featured and has to speak for their own self about the job.
“If the test is racist, it would have to ask questions that only white people know the answer to, like what is a Hootenanny?”
I’m white, and I’m not totally sure what a hootenanny is...
