Media commentary today and in recent days indicates that there is the possibility that the Obama White House will reinstitute the draft as part of its “stimulus plan” to “create” several million new jobs in the U.S.
One wonders how the idealistic, youthful, leftist Obama voters — most of whom don’t even know the names of the capitals of their own states, let alone the capitals of foreign countries — will react to conscription.
A principle of liberty is that the armed forces should be composed of volunteers. The U.S. military embraces this position as well, arguing, for decades, that an all-volunteer force is motivated and will do its job more effectively than conscripts. One of the reasons there are fewer combat deaths today in Iraq and Afghanistan than there were in past wars is that the soldiers are professionals.
But, Barack Hussein Obama, Jr., the president elect, and incoming White House chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, support the draft. In a radio interview, in 2006, in fact, Emanuel came out publicly in favor of the draft, at a time when he was in the leadership of the House Democrats. “There’s nothing wrong with all Americans having civil defense training — doing civil service,” said Emanuel. “That will give them a sense of what it means to be an American. The state National Guard units can be a vehicle for that. ”
Emanuel said the age of service would be “between 18 and 25.”

Reinstating the draft is how the left will insure the US military never goes to war again for any reason. Just like the Viet Nam protests, expect to see lefty nut cases protesting in the streets at the slightest hint of US military action by a conscript force. ......red

A huge number of Americans’ ethnocentrism and lack of geographic knowledge is really disturbing.

Not really. Having spends years on every continent of this world, excepting Antartica (although I did get close), I can safely opine that most of the world sucks.

Joseph Biden, the top Democrat of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, made the prediction after new data released by the Pentagon showed the US Army failing to meet its recruitment targets for four straight months.
“We’re going to have to face that question,” Biden said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” television show when asked if it was realistic to expect restoration of the draft.
“The truth of the matter is, it is going to become a subject, if, in fact, there’s a 40 percent shortfall in recruitment. It’s just a reality,” he said.

He doesn't mind tweaking with his supporters a bit, such as keeping Gates as Secretary of Defense, or having Rick Warren deliver a prayer even though it ticks off homosexuals, but he's not going to do something that fundamentally stupid.

the hippie dippies might also get sent to Africa (where Bambi and Susan Rice have big plans for the US military to solve everything from Darfur to poverty) so they can be the peace corps in camouflage fatigues

The only way these conscripts will ever be sent out of the country at all is if the military is needed for some humanitarian mission (maybe aid to the poor starving Palestinians, for instance?). These are the only purposes for which the military will ever be deployed under the rule of these pacifists.
O will keep these 18-25 year olds in involuntary servitude, in direct violation of the 13th amendment, stateside, doing make-work jobs much like the New Deal. And it'll have about as much effect on the national economic well-being as that did -- that is, no effect. (It took a shooting war to get us out of the Great Depression. That's off the table, even if necessary, in the O peacenik administration.)
Meanwhile, since no one's getting shot at, the moronic sheeple who elected O will accept this new conscription without so much as a whimper.
The notion that 18-25 year olds, or anyone for that matter, need to be held in a state of involuntary servitude to realize what it is to be an "American" is deeply offensive to me. It should be so to anyone who values old, quaint American concepts like freedom and ownership of oneself and one's labors.
The O is going to need troops to keep the peace at home, and what better way to do it than by drafting all the rabble rousers to be storm troopers in the USS of Omerica. They will be coming to your neighborhood soon.
