CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia remains the envy of most of the rest of the country when it comes to state budget revenues. It ended the first half of its budget year last month with a potential surplus of nearly $75 million.

Apologies to the usual crowd of West Virginia bashers. Yes, we believe in family, God, and America in these beloved hills. Yes, we have issues, but what state and people doesn't?

Don’t worry. Once coal is banned then WV will join the ranks of the lame states that spend more than they take in.

I understand the surplus fund will be named the
Robert Byrd Fund which will be dedicated to keeping track of all memorials, public spaces, parks, highways, etc. named for Robert Byrd.

Aren’t they going to feel foolish missing out on all those billions to bail out the tax and spend states.

Something very important remains unsaid here.

Look at the demographic makeup of West Virginia, vis-a-vis other states, particularly those states that are drowning in red ink.

Once you’ve taken the time to learn about this very politically-uncorrect reality, it is easy to understand just WHY West Virginia is doing as well as it is.

I would reckon the same goes for the other ten or eleven states that aren’t facing fiscal deficits this time around...

The state that people love to bash as full of hicks and rubes, can take better care of itself than the “sophisticated” NY and CA?

HOW????

I’m no WV basher having been born there and now living about 5 mis. beyond the state line. WV has always been frugal in state expenditures out of necessity. I’m sorry to read that the current balance is due to the severance tax as I think Obama and the Democrats will soon put an end to mining coal for producing electrical power. At least Obama has said it’s his intention to drive the coal producers out of business with carbon taxes.

"I understand the surplus fund will be named the Robert Byrd Fund..."

Things are looking up. With MN sending Al Franken to the Senate, WV has been replaced as the butt of all the dumb jokes!

Having been born and raised in Mississippi I completely understand state bashing. As soon as I meet a person and tell them I am from MS I can see “that” look in their eyes. They are amazed that I stand erect and that I can speak English. I know what they are thinking the minute I tell them where I am from.....”Red neck, white trash, back wood, racist”. Oh, and if they are of an African American culture....then they REALLY get that look in their eye!!!!

The West Virginia State Legislature and County governments usually spend money for the bare minimum of what is mandated by the state constitution. Aside from Byrd, Rahall, and Rockefeller, the Democratic Party in WV tends to be more conservative than RINOs. As you mentioned the severance tax revenue may be in doubt in the future and the burden of unfunded pension liabilities darken the future.

“HOW????”

An objective view of American history would answer your question. A two word quick answer would be self reliance.

Indiana’s doing pretty well. When we need cash, we move the clock around and sell a road or two.

Even Byrd was patriot enough to vote against amnesty. And he had a pretty good speech about why it was wrong as well, if memory serves.

Personally, I’m anything but PC. Demographics are a big reason for WVa’s financial situation. Few blacks and no illegals crowding emergency rooms and welfare offices. Add in a governor who doesn’t spend money like water in vote buying schemes and the state can boast a surplus.
