Even as Israelis and Palestinians plunged deeper into conflict, U.S. President-elect Barack Obama remained silent, refusing to budge from his one-president-at-a-time mantra.
Obama takes office on Jan. 20 but has not commented on the Middle East crisis since Israel launched attacks on Gaza nine days ago. His advisers insist that only President George W. Bush can speak for America until then.
The Palestinian death toll in nine days of Israeli attacks has risen to more than 500. Hamas, which ended a six-month ceasefire, has fired rockets deeper into Israel than ever before, hitting major cities and killing four Israelis.
While most prominent U.S. politicians have backed Israel, critics have noted that Obama joined Bush in condemning the killing of civilians in attacks in November in Mumbai, India. They would have liked him to say something about the fate of Palestinian civilians caught in the fighting.
The president-elect also has commented on the global economic crisis and his plans to try to pull the U.S. economy out of recession.
Asked about the apparent contradiction, an Obama transition aide who asked not to be named said on Sunday: "President Bush is our nation's president until Jan. 20, and he is responsible for our nation's diplomacy with the world.
"During this transition period, we are not engaging in any action that could send confusing signals to the world about who speaks on behalf of the United States."

Foreign Policy — at least, overt, transparent foreign policy — appears to be “above the pay grade” of the *President Elect.*
This task is above Obambi’s pay grade.
Don’t look for a major network news anchor to huff “some presidents DO this sort of thing well, while others (rolls eyes) do NOT.”
Is that the excuse now?
Certainly wasn't what he was saying when he was pushing for the auto industry bailout. Certainly isn't his stance with the edicts from "The Office of the President Elect".
According to this story Joe Biden is going on a visit to Pakistan this week to defuse tensions there. He is supposedly going to offer 15 billion dollars to them.
Is Joe doing this without permission from Obama who believes there is but one President?
I believe Obama is keeping quiet and hoping the Israeli war dissappears before he has to make a statement.
Lack of guts.
The president-select is now receiving intelligence briefings about what scumbags hamas have been and still are and always will be ... the same hamas thugs he and his buddies and mentors have been kissing up to while critiquing US foreign policy that “makes the world” hate us”
harder to criticize Israel now that he knows the hard core islamists are irrational murderous thugs. Even a stupid person would get that clue from the intelligence briefings
“...one president at a time....?”
In Obama’s case, it’s “one brain cell at a time...”
Wouldn't be "prudent" for Obama to show where his loyalties lie. Better to lie.
The last time the US was in such a horrible financial and humanitarian "fix" was in 1930's...and what finally got us out of the "fix"..
..well, in case you don't know..... it as WWII.
We had the same kind of socialist politician running things, and if it was not for the war....we may be still dealing with the aftermath today (there are some who would argue that we still are anyway).
So.....it is clear what you must do...send troops into Iran, and begin the cleaning process in the ME which everybody knows needs to be done, but nobody has the balls to do it.
Must we have to suffer a nuclear blast right here in America before one of you pussys decide that enough is enough and that the safety of the American people takes precedent over PC?
War is good for the economy....and as long as we have a volunteer army who are willing to do it, war is a whole lot better than any kind of cocimamy "stimulus" plan that you retards can come up with.
That’s my feeling, too. Bambi sure hasn’t been silent about the rest of his positions and was going full bore ahead on the phantom “president elect” stuff until this issue came up. He doesn’t mind in the least conflicting with Bush; he’s just afraid to tip his hand on this one until he’s inaugurated and officially in office, however, because he knows how radically different the US position is going to be after Jan 20.
“Nuance”
He’s just using his big brain before blessing us with his so-well-thought out answer to the whole thing.
He sure had a lot to say during his campaign about fixing the world, though.
The punk knows that his support for Hamas will tick the nation off before he has time to be sworn in. This might be the catalyst for the Natural Born issue to go from smoke to full bore flames. He has to be very careful until inauguration day.
He’ll say nothing on this, but he’ll do a weird pre-inaugural
Saturday address on the economy?!?!
It’s pathetic how the press just eats up this BS about one President at a time while ignoring the contradictions.
He’s saying nothing on this because it wont help him politically.
