I think it was Reagan who said "We begin bombing in five minutes".

I suspect you meant to write "a booming economy" <grin>.

“And this is if you are allowed to own it any longer.”

I read they are requiring your SSN before you can purchase gold now. Is that true?

Thanks! LOL!! You’re correct. I was having problems with typing in that word. I was distracted I guess. That’s funny.

.......Seems some people revel in misery.......

They are unable to cope with the present and insist on a past that is gone. Toffler called it Future Shock. The change is so great that minds that don’t keep up fall further behind and are in constant pain

I like Ezra, but I think he needs to take off the rose tinted glasses.

While things probably won't get as bad as the 30's, they're going to get much worse than they are now. The shocks to the world's economy have only begun, and the vicious cycle of downturn->layoffs->lower consumer spending->downturn has yet to begin.

Nah, Obama is gonna say everything is great. The media will pick it up. And the sheeple will swallow it.

It's hard to say how it will be described.

Were the Dark Ages a "depression", or a "recession", or a "correction", or a "downturn"?

Did the Global Economy (for that era) continue to click along undeterred?

>You’ve got that right. I expect the Obamedia to start telling us what a bombing economy we have starting on 01-21-09. Look for rainbows, teddy bears, butterflies and unicorns.

LOL! NPR: Poverty?? What’s that?

I have been purchasing it through an online broker for the past couple of years. Little bit at a time. quarter of an oz here, .10 of an oz there. About 5% of my income. Like clockwork. Not enough to really hit me if it goes down a lot, but enough to help if it goes up a lot.

Buy in and ship it when it gets to an ounce or so. The commissions are pretty low, lower than stocks. The shipping when spread out over a bunch is pretty cheap. I keep it in a safe at home.

The only one outside the house that knows its there is the mailman, and I doubt if he is paying that close attention.

Definition: A depression is a recession managed by the government.

It depends on the the government’s reaction. It their continued reaction is to try to “bail out” practically everyone, especially those who should be allowed to fail and will eventually fail anyway, then, yes, we are headed for a Great Depression.

I tend to agree, though I'm torn on this issue.

On the one hand, we are repeating the classically bad events of the Hoover-FDR transition. And we're compounding that with a lot other classically stupid moves (printing money at absurd rates, lowering the interest rate, thus further cheapening the value of the dollar).

While home prices and the stock market are down, these both appear to have been bubbles that popped and are correcting themselves. Yes, there are a lot of bad economic indicators out there, but I don't know anyone who has lost their house, their job, are selling their goods to get by, etc. I know this is anecdotal, but the more I ask people this, the more I hear the same thing: the economy has slowed, but everyone is OK (accept their 401Ks, of course).

My key point of contention is this: the MSM reports agree with my gut feeling (that we are headed for a major depression). That in and by itself makes me take a step back and ask this:

1. Was the economic downturn of September a set up for the Mother of all October Surprises?

2. Was 2/5ths of the ‘crisis’ manufactured to get Obammie the Commie elected while the remaining 3/5ths was caused by the law of unintended consequences (Madoff would still be riding high on his Ponzi scheme if the economy hadn't fallen to the point that investors wanted some of their money back from him)?

3. Is the MSM trying to cause economic catastrophe to hand a Marxist in the WH all he needs to completely socialize our economy? Remember Rahm’s quote that you never let a good crisis get away. And let's also remember that, before the election, some American leftists were talking about abandoning the US dollar in favor of a global monetary system that promises to be “stable” (which has been one of the repeated arguments of socialists — that Capitalism is unstable and only a socialist government can stabilize an economy).

So, on the one hand, I'm worried about the approach of another Great Depression and have begun stocking up on canned goods. On the other hand, I'm sitting back and wondering if this is all being driven by socialists.

I honestly don't know the answer, which is why I'm erring on the side of being prepared.

Few may have noticed, but we hardly make ANYTHING here.

Yes, but I was told recently, that we make lots of stuff if we compare the overall liner output, and the contraction of the leading index indicators as opposed to the IMS rates.

So you see, we still make lots of stuff here.

lol..

Why did you ping me? You can go ahead and make strawman arguments to your heart’s content. (Or carry the argument back to the original thread, if you’re man enough).

Relax, I’m just pulling your leg.

To: Who is John Galt?

When I first started lurking around Free Republic, I was thrilled to find a meeting place where people still defended their values and fought for their rights.

I have to say that I don’t even see a place to really do that anymore. Everywhere, I find resignation to vote fraud, to the government doing the opposite of what the people want, to having our money mismanaged to the point of worthless currency and our news agencies absorbed into a government arm.

I’m not being critical, just posting personal observations. I would like to find a way to fight back. One Freeper posted an article asking for volunteers to help him get news out then he pulled the post.

Sorry I’m so off-subject, I have a hard time accepting the hand I’m being dealt lately.
