Caterpillar consolidating 1,400 jobs to Texas (a non-union friendly, right to work state)

SEGUIN — Caterpillar Inc. will build a $170 million engine-manufacturing plant here that will employ more than 1,400 people, company and state officials announced Thursday.

The economic development coup for Texas is part of the consolidation of Caterpillar's engine plants in Illinois — where a plant closing and layoffs were announced Thursday — and South Carolina.

The layoffs in Illinois as a result of this consolidation happened to be Union jobs. When will voters in these states ever wake up to the death spiral in the manufacturing sector that Unions have created.

I hope they won’t hire illegals.

Well, that could be considered good news.
Now for the bad news...well, we Freepers know what it is.

Never.

They will call the wages in Texas “slavery” and push for mandatory unions. They will probably get them too seeing as the unions and the Obamacrats are Marxists-in-arms.

They are awake and rather than fix the problem they have elected a pro-union government and they will attempt to level the playing field by forcing unionization on all of the states. It doesn't make much sense but it is what it is.

You beat me to the post. I am sure that is what Caterpillar is going to do. They will hire illegals and have repercussions.

"They will call the wages in Texas “slavery” and push for mandatory unions."

Correct me if I am wrong here, but I think Texas is one of the few states in our union that has no state income tax.

The wages of Caterpillar workers in Texas may well be lower than those of workers in Illinois, but I'd bet the Texas workers with lower wages get to take home more money than the Illinois workers who pay a tax on their incomes to the state of Illinois (where Gov. Blago can decide how it gets spent!)

Cat has had a strategy to gradually move factory jobs out of IL, where they are saddled with the UAW and move them to right to work states. This has been going on for years.
The jobs lost in Mossville/Peoria are mostly UAW. Peoria, the home of the new Secy of Transportation; who has been unsuccesfull in getting any new Interstate to connect Peoria with Chicago and St. Louis.
Let’s hope that the Rats do not succeed in forcing more states to adopted closed shop rules.

No, they will not hire illegals. They will hire from the local labor pool - regular citizens who have no use for unions.

Contrary to the typical stereotypes, Texas manufacturing companies are not awash in illegals performing skilled manufacturing jobs. Toyota did not build a state of the art plant in San Antonio for purposes of hiring illegal aliens.

Cat suffered strike after strike with little mercy from the UAW when I was buying and using their equipment in the 80s. This is the same UAW that destroyed a half dozen farm tractor manufacturers in Iowa and Illinois and Maytag manufacturing over the same period.
Cat should run for its life.

And then Cat will eventually move those jobs to China.
Just like the Textile industry.

Yes, here in Texas, we have no State Income Taxes.

You are correct ... Texas has no personal income tax on the state level. We do have a business franchise tax which is a de facto income tax on the source of all revenue, businesses. I am sure the Cat people got a deferment.

The new plant is going to Seguin TX which is SE of San Antonio. Very nice town; white folk are the real minority.

Lots of “fees”, lots of permits. No one from IL should consider moving here.
They’re more suited to IL climate. TX is hotter then hell. Scorpions everywhere. Fireants are nasty little bast****. Uh, anything else.....

Tennessee also doesn’t have a state income tax and we are a right to work state. We’ve seen a lot of big companies locate here recently and I think it’s because we have so few unions and we are a right to work state. No, we don’t make union wages. I make $20 an hour and have great benefits on top of that (health, dental, life, 401K, profit sharing), but our cost of living is probably half what it is in Northern states. Our sales tax is high but it’s not enough to discourage new industry or people moving to the state.

the comment about closing a plant in SC is a bit of a suprise. With Freightliner’s plants in NC I would think that SC would be more attactive than TX for a new plant. In addition there’s a nice empty building in Winnsboro (I think) Mack had a plant there that I understand is now closed.

Cat will build engine plants in China for the Chinese market. The trend in the US is now leaning much more towards manufacturing of large, heavy end-items in the US/Americas.

Logistical/transportation costs for these type items have changed the business models going forward.

We have no sales OR income tax but our climate is awful. Please stay in Illinois or Texas.
