Parody author defends 'Barack the Magic Negro' December 29, 2008 12:35 EST
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- The Memphis author of the musical parody "Barack the Magic Negro" says he isn't surprised the song has gotten some people upset.
Author Paul Shanklin describes the song as political satire and says it's supposed to be provocative.
The song, which is sung to the tune of "Puff the Magic Dragon, has drawn attention and criticism since Chip Saltsman -- the former head of the Republican Party in Tennessee -- sent out a CD with the song on it as Christmas presents.
Saltsman managed Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's presidential campaign and is now running for chairman of the Republican National Committee.
The song questions whether Obama is "authentically" black and intimates white voters wouldn't have voted for him if he had been from "the hood."

Shanklin was on Andrew Clark SR. on AM600 WREC defending this yesterday. He gave of course the backstory.

I like your work Mr. Shanklin, but “Barak the Magic Negro” was just a plain stupid idea.

Somebody told me that Obama’s CHANGE mantra actually stands for “Come Help A Negro Get Elected”. Even some of my Democrat voter friends tell me that they have become less than enthusiastic because they now realize that this guy was elected BECAUSE he claims to be “black” and has no other qualifications.

Whoa...do I detect symptoms of Buyers' Remorse' from your Democratic friends?.

The lyrics to Barack the Magic Negro were lifted from actual soundbites by the Rev. Sharpton. The title, by the LA Times. They doth protest too much.

Barack, the Magic Negro was a superb poke at liberal Democrat attitudes about race and entitlement. It was dead-on accurate about the black misery pimps' feelings about Obama--as seen earlier in Al Sharpton's comments on Obama's genuineness and later in JJ's expressed desire to cut Obama's nuts off.

So some people, because of their own ignorance and racism, are offended? All the more reason to hit them harder and more often until they blow a gasket and go completely, unmistakably nuts.

Our object is to defeat them, not to convince them that, deep down, we're just like they are. And if, while getting hit up against the side of the head, they should experience a road to Damascus moment, all the better.

Personally I thought it was one of the funniest things he’s done in a long time, it was right up there with Clinton’s “She’s always abitchin at me”.

Correct. The Left invented the “Magic Negro” mantra, not the Republicans.

The truth is that Barak was to white for south chicago politics and that is why he had to immerse himself in the rev wrights black liberation theology church in order to show that he was down with the struggle.
South chicago folks eyed him suspiciously as a privelidged kid raised in hawaii by white folk and going to the finest prep schools
shanklins parody is dead nuts on

Agreed, but it’s not as bad as “Banking Queen” [Dancing Queen]. I have to turn the station off whenever that is played.
