The Chip Saltsman/RNC Chair mini-scandal may prove to be more important than I initially thought. As is often the case in these matters, the specific incident is less important than the responses.
Recently, it has appeared that (partly as a result of Katon Dawson and Chip Saltsman coming under fire over racial issues) former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackell (disclosure: I am supporting Blackwell), had emerged from the pack to become a front-runner for RNC Chair.
... Still, though, the smart money was on current RNC Chair Mike Duncan to retain his position.
But in the wake of the Saltsman scandal, Duncan was highly critical of Saltsman, while Blackwell, an African-American, issued this statement:
"Unfortunately, there is hypersensitivity in the press regarding matters of race. This is in large measure due to President-Elect Obama being the first African-American elected president. I don't think any of the concerns that have been expressed in the media about any of the other candidates for RNC chairman should disqualify them. When looked at in the proper context, these concerns are minimal. All of my competitors for this leadership post are fine people."

I like Ken Blackwell. Smart, savvy and straight up, stand up guy.
Mike Duncan is a RINO and should go. I like Blackwell better than Steele.
He would be good, I suppose, but he couldn’t do anything in OH in 2006.

Blackwell is the real deal. Steele is the faux conservative, albeit, very compassionate, no doubt.
No Republican could “do anything” statewide in Ohio in 2006. And, that followed a similar pattern nationwide.
I think he’s a careerist beholden to McConnell. He’s good at raising money, and probably not a terrible guy, but anyone associated with Bush and the 2008 election cycle needs to go, if only for symbolic purposes.
Duncan must be running scared and trying to bring in $$$$ to the RNC to prove he should be re-elected. I received a call today (SUNDAY) asking for $150 for the RNC and Mike Duncan — never, ever has anyone calling to ask for money for the RNC ever specifically mentioned Duncan’s name — until today.
I like both of them.
The first time that I ever heard Blackwell, he was on Hannity’s show, trying to explain Black Liberation Theology and the dangers it poses. I was very interested and was cheering him on. Hannity cut him off, saying that it was too deep for most people to understand, and that he just wanted to get a single point across.
I like Ken Blackwell and think he would be good for the Party. Don’t want anyone that is currently part of the RNC like Duncan or from Huckabee, Romney or any other campaign from 2006.

As an Ohio resident, I can tell it had nothing to do with Ken's positions or his campaign. Tremendous amounts of out of state money, the media screaming that he had "stolen" the 2004 election for Bush as Secretary of State, the awful RINO administrations of Taft and Voinovich over the previous 16 years and a liberal dollop of Democrat racism by playing the Uncle Tom card doomed Blackwell's chances.
Steele is far too cautious and Duncan reminds me of a Democrat. We (Republicans) must place strong leadership (men & women) throughout the GOP.
Same here, personally I think Saltsman is a lightweight and as smarmy as Huckabee.

I agree with you on that. I voted for Blacwell in 2006 but there just weren’t enough of us to ut him into the Governor’s mansion.
Saltsman made a complete fool of himself. He is done!
