AUSTIN A South Texas rancher got a good-news phone call Tuesday about a presidential pardon that wipes away a felony conviction for hiring undocumented workers to harvest his watermelons 16 years ago.
"I really don't know why or anything," said John Allen Aregood, of Riviera, a ranching town about 11 miles south of Kingsville. "It's just a good Christmas present."
He was one of 19 people granted pardons Tuesday by President George W. Bush.
The only Texan on the list, Aregood paid a modest fine and served two years of probation after his conviction for aiding and harboring unauthorized immigrants.
Aregood, 64, is no longer is in the watermelon business and said he has never met Bush.

A person who aids and abets these CRIMINALS should get
a minimum 1 year in jail and a 10,000 dollar fine for each
Criminal they aid and abet.
I’m not familiar with that one.

Mmmm... gee Mr. Bush...seems there is 2 border patrol agents in prison right now for doing their jobs. How about righting this injustice and set them free with a pardon.
George Bush just makes me want to scream with this stuff. The man just seems to be pathologically insane about illegal immigration and border security.
Just what goes through his mind regarding illegal immigration? I mean, this Aregood guy wasn’t even expecting a pardon, yet Bush singles him out to give one to.
And all the while, hundreds of thousands of heartfelt appeals to pardon BP agents Ramos and Compean go unheeded by him. It’s just nuts.
This is disgusting.. with our two agents in prison for doing their job..President Bush needs to pardon them.
You need to help me with your reasoning: because two Border Patrol agents shot someone in the ass and tried to cover it up, a sixteen-year-old conviction that resulted in no jail time cannot be pardoned?
and Scooter Libby — he didn’t commit any real crime.
Here's a hint. Bush thought he was elected to create a "new America". I am beginning to think that 9-11 actually delayed the creating of Bush's "new America" much to his chagrin.
We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture. Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende. For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America. Our future cannot be separated from the future of Latin America. As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico. George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000. |
Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:
In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on. Whatsamatta, rudeboy, are you afraid someone is going to cut into your cheap labor/globalism nonsense?
Let me just say about Ramos and Compean....too bad they didn’t kill that SOB drug running illegal alien.
Actually, I’m trying to help people out . . . it’s possible to oppose illegal immigration without appear like blithering idiots, and you need all the help you can get.
One other thing, with a little more time at the range, Compean could've. Now, he has the spare time to think about the fourteen times he completely missed.
I despise W. He fooled me twice. And for the next four years when people keep saying “It’s Bush’s fault”, they’ll be partially right.

That’s one possibility. Another is that he was not trying to hit OAD.
(And if Compean thought he was in danger, as he argued at trial, then why was he shooting to miss?)
