Targeting Obesity Alongside Hunger Obama Administration May Look to Tie Food Assistance to Improved Nutrition
In many areas where lots of people receive aid, good, nutritious food can be scarce. The District's Ward 8 went nine years without a full-service grocer.

The worsening economic crunch is causing the tab for food assistance programs to balloon, and with the rising costs has come an intensifying debate over whether -- and how -- the U.S. government can tackle simultaneously the paradoxically linked problems of hunger and obesity.
The statistics spell out the dilemma. The number of Americans on food stamps topped 31.5 million in September, a record high. Obesity, too, is at epidemic levels: In 30 states, at least 25 percent of the population is dangerously overweight. Nationally, 31.9 percent of children are considered overweight or obese.
For decades, the government has treated hunger and obesity as unrelated phenomena. But at a news conference last week in Chicago, Tom Vilsack, President-elect Barack Obama's choice for agriculture secretary, said he would put "nutrition at the center of all food assistance programs," a signal that he will get involved next year when Congress moves to reauthorize nutrition programs that support school breakfasts and lunches as well as summer food for children.

Maybe he can get some tips from the Obama family - if he can get him to stop smoking and knock her off the chuck wagon...
Ask Houston about what the Katrina “victims” wanted to eat and thumbed their noses up at? He’s gonna make a lot of people on food assistance mad.
Put restrictions on what food stamps can purchase could be done...in other words eliminate the pop, cookies, candy, chips....make them pay for it out of their pockets if they want garbage food.
Maybe the hungry could feast on slabs of flab sliced off the obese? Kill two birds with one stone, as they say.
The socialists are out for total control- even ones’s daily diet. They asked for it and it’s coming.
Feed the obese to the starving.
I’m thinking Oprah might be rethinking her endorsement right about now...................
I wonder who has the MOST fat people.... Democrats or Republicans...?
I agree. However, we both know what will happen.
Minorities will sue claiming certain foods are part of their ethnicity, hence denying them chips and soda is racist.
“The number of Americans on food stamps topped 31.5 million in September, a record high. Obesity, too, is at epidemic levels... .”
Why is it that I see so many overweight folks buying food with food stamps?
And while I’m on a roll, why is it these folks can buy the best brands on the government’s dole, while I buy the cheap stuff with money I worked hard to earn?
Re-reading this, I was caught by this line in the story:
“In many areas where lots of people receive aid, good, nutritious food can be scarce. The District’s Ward 8 went nine years without a full-service grocer.”
First, we know why there are no grocery stores in Ward 8....crime.
Second, this opens the door to gov’t-run grocery stores...the only place you can spend your food stamps.
Coming to a neighborhood near you.
Tax KFC-Budget Balanced!
Everyone should have choices but tax payers shouldn’t have to foot the bill. Cut food assistance to staples. Flour, sugar, potatoes etc. They can make their own chips and sweets if they want. Limiting what can be bought works well with WIC.
“chips and soda is racist.”
The woman was asked if she goes to churches.
She said “naw, I’z only goes to Kentucky Fried Chicken and Poppi’s.”
The only hungry in America are those that choose to be.
Another constituency of Obambi gets a slap in the face...
