This was a hot topic on Louisiana talk shows when LaBruzzo advocated this back in September.

Out of curiousity, were callers to talk shows in mostly favor or against paying welfare people to be sterilized?

Why not? The prenatal care alone would more than make it worth while.

I like this idea a lot. But why exclude men?

This is immoral—it is formally cooperating in a sin.

This is one of those moral quandaries we have put ourselves into largely by abandoning the faith and values of our founders.

I suspect the exercise of liberty without the constraints of personal virtue was largely what Franklin had in mind when he admonished, "...a republic, if you can keep it."

"What I'm really studying is any and all possibilities that we can reduce the number of people that are going from generational welfare to generational welfare, " he said. He said his program would be voluntary. It could involve tubal ligation, encouraging other forms of birth control or, to avoid charges of gender discrimination, vasectomies for men."

He said his program would be voluntary.

They all start out as "voluntary" programs, and when they don't work then suddenly it will become "semi-voluntary", with only the biggest abusers of the system mandated by court order to non-voluntarily be sterilized. After a while the numbers start changing over what falls into their ideal category, a slippery slope that can be handed over to other administrations to be abused once it is in place.

Just stop increasing their welfare checks after the first baby and i think you’ll see a drastic reduction in births.

This is a great opening to break the racket of “donated organs”. People should sell their organs to the highest bidder. Supply and demand will make the price affordable.

This proposal is merely having folks sell their “tubes” to the government for a bounty called welfare.

The judgment for the RATS killing all the babies over the last 30+ years, a shortage of taxpayers for the “BIG-Government” they like. I say no this kind of idea.

This just doesn’t sound good to me.

I would rather pass a law that would REDUCE their payments if they get pregnant while on welfare.

Maybe that would keep the guy’s junk in their pants and the women’s legs closed.

Not saying they can’t have sex, just that they had better understand the consequences of their hormonal actions.

This program should be voluntary, but also they should receive slightly less welfare for each child they have instead of the reverse.

LaBruzzo considering plan to pay poor women $1,000 to have tubes tied

Save the $1000 and cut the welfare programs.

That’s not a good thing. It’s like abortion in some respects. What they need to do is get the government out of private businesses and private lives.

Yeah, great idea. The govenment can't teach people how to behave like moral human beings, so the next best solution is to pay women to let the state mutilate them.

I opt out of all such "solutions." They are just way-stations on the road to the "final" solution.

Good idea, but having government do this is a bad idea.
Private voluntary population control is good. Government sterilization has a very nasty history in the US, to say nothing of less democratic regimes.

This is a good idea for all welfare recipients. This would make it impossible to have an accidental child. One could still have children, with either a vasectomy or tied tubes, but it would take saving up for a sperm aspiration for males, or an IVF cycle for women. The person would have to prefer to spend $1-5K on fertility than on drugs or hi def TVs.

‘Tis a modest proposal... And a horribly crappy one at that. This is wrong, no 2 ways about it.

If you occupy these people’s time with work, life skills classes and such they’ll have less time to sit around and *****.

Make them attend in order to get their welfare checks. Don’t increase the amount for each new kid.

How does the saying go? “You get more of what you subsidize.”

Besides, a far greater number of teen pregnancies are intentional than people want to believe. I don’t think many welfare recipients would take advantage of it, not to mention the moral issues it introduces.
