There was a time – many years ago – when Time magazine was considered to be an American and international "institution." That explained why the world's movers and shakers paid a lot of attention to the individual that the founder Henry Luce and his successors picked as the magazine's Man of the Year.

But gradually, Time magazine was transformed from that institution into the older and serious brother of People magazine, and now it has become, for all practical purposes, the Lenin Mausoleum of American journalism, an institutional corpse that is being preserved for some reason

So we seem to be regressing to the reactionary "Great Man" theory of history. Mr. Putin is expected to evoke the memories of such Russian historical giants as Peter the Great and Comrade Joseph Stalin.

Personally, I'm not as impressed with the new tough-talking man in the Kremlin. Yes, Russia with its huge energy resources and large territory and population is reasserting its influence as one of the world's great powers.

This site needs a grammar check. “I have been reading it since the 1960’s.” I still subscribe to it, but it certainly is not the same news magazine as it was in the 1960’s. I agree it is not as bad as Time or Newsweak.

I do like the guide to colleges.

wait, i don't get it. because time sucks, America is losing it's power? America's power is defined by it's elite media?

well, perhaps so. Maybe, though, America's citizens will wake the hell up and be America's citizens, like the founders intended for them to be.

Maybe if we didn’t tear down our business people and encourage celebs to get involved in foreign policy we wouldn’t be in this fix. I don’t think the Chinese elite turn to Jet Li for advice on how to deal with Taiwan.

Going thru the attic a while back, I came across some copies of Time, one a 1976 BiCentennial issue.

Amazing to see the dumbdown process, I guess it’s written at below the tenth grade level now, I forget the exact standards they used then.

However, in information content, it mirrored the Economist.

Now, it’s simply a People with a couple of articles about foreign events. They have had good articles about Iraq and stuff, but in terms of the old Gold Standard of informing you about the general state of the world, a miserable failure.
