There was a time many years ago when Time magazine was considered to be an American and international "institution." That explained why the world's movers and shakers paid a lot of attention to the individual that the founder Henry Luce and his successors picked as the magazine's Man of the Year.

But gradually, Time magazine was transformed from that institution into the older and serious brother of People magazine, and now it has become, for all practical purposes, the Lenin Mausoleum of American journalism, an institutional corpse that is being preserved for some reason

So we seem to be regressing to the reactionary "Great Man" theory of history. Mr. Putin is expected to evoke the memories of such Russian historical giants as Peter the Great and Comrade Joseph Stalin.
Personally, I'm not as impressed with the new tough-talking man in the Kremlin. Yes, Russia with its huge energy resources and large territory and population is reasserting its influence as one of the world's great powers.

While China, the Middle Eastern oil-producing countries and other emerging economies in East Asia and the Middle East, as well as in Latin America (Venezuela) may be challenging American global supremacy, the United States remains central to the global economic and military infrastructure, and there are no signs that any of the rising powers, including the European Union (EU) is ready to replace Washington in the driver's seat.

“the older and serious brother of People magazine”
Indeed. Along with Newsweek.
All those stupid celebs like Angelina are considered among the most influential people in the world shows where Time magazine’s priorities are.

It’s 10:06 Alaskan time .
Well, it certainly shows where the public's priorities are.
Bingo. Saying Jolie is influential is not lauding the fact but reporting it. Unfortunately she is all too influential. Public, vast majority, is imbecilic and adolescent. Remember, Americans just elected Obama. And the other choice was McCain. And now 70% of Americans are thrilled with the big O. Including majority of R voters.
You have to read the whole thing to find the kicker.
Basically 90% of the text is a conservative-themed lead up to the statement that:
“The hope is that the next person in the White House after 2008 will be more inclined to work together with the rest of the world in trying to defuse global military tensions, especially in the Middle East and continue the process of economic globalization.
But the growing anti-globalization sentiment and anti-immigration mood in the United States in the form of political pressure in support of protectionism and isolationism suggest that the adjusting of US interests and policies to the changing realities of weakening American economic and military power will not be easy.”
Our economic problems and the fact that Wall Street is no longer the financial center of the universe is precisely because WE are no longer following the liberal economic model. As for our military commitments, they are another matter entirely.
Very sneaky.
The author of the piece, Mr. Leon Hadar, makes it clear there is no reason that Time might straggle on for another seventy-five years as it is already a “loss leader” for its parent company:
“But gradually, Time magazine was transformed from that institution into the older and serious brother of People magazine, and now it has become, for all practical purposes, the Lenin Mausoleum of American journalism, an institutional corpse that is being preserved for some reason (prestige?) while People magazine, HBO and other media outlets keep the parent company in business.”
I agree. These rags are corpses, and the internet killed them, but not for the reason the editors and management of the rags believe. The internet killed them because they didn’t sell with the American people. Only a narrow slice of leftists believe the garbage they print. A greater number of Americans don’t read, they just watch American Idol. Mainstream thinking Americans, or what remains of us, won’t read these rags because of their content.
Many years ago I subscribed to the Sporting News. But in the early 1990’s, when TSN only cared about “social consciousness in sports” I was done with it. I subscribed because I wanted to read about how Ryne Sandberg could hit Bruce Sutter’s split finger fastball. I didn’t care whether the next manager of the Cubs should be black.
Time and the other dinosaurs have the same problem today. Nobody cares what they care about.
I used to browse through them at the doctor's office a few years ago, but now I would rather stare at the ceiling.
This was difficult to read——poorly written.
Let these morons bet against the USA just as they have for 200 years, and we will come out on top again.
We are so good at recognizing new markets and capitalizing on them that we leave the rest of the world in our dust.
What original invention (other than Karaoke) has come out of Japan?
crack ******
USN&WR is probably several steps above Newsweak and Time in terms of credibility and quality, but from what I’ve seen it has declined considerably since my days in high school in the 1980s when I used it to keep up with current events for history class.
Proves my point. Looks like some whore. I assume you are male. Why not go for man in the 2009.
Ah I see now.
