A man who bought a Lotto ticket worth $1 million at a Huntington Station store was almost swindled out of his winnings by the clerk, State Police said.

Carlos Canas bought the $1 million Lotto Luck scratch-off ticket at Huntington Beverage, 1687 New York Ave., on June 7 and immediately knew he had won.

Wanting to verify his winnings and get information on how to claim the prize, police said Canas handed the ticket to the clerk, Mohinder K. Misri.

Just yesterday my wife found a wallet stuffed with dough and credit cards by an ATM machine in the local bank ( in rural Japan ) . She promptly handed it over to the clerk . Just then the woman walked in , asked the clerk if anyone had turned in her wallet , he said “ Yes ,that woman over there . Here you are “ . She didn’t say thank you and walked out of the bank .

I commend your wife for her honesty and she'll have her reward for it. The wallet owner's ungratefulness is her own problem. I hope she learns how to be thankful before she becomes old and has to depend on other people's kindness on a regular basis. What goes around...

When I was about 7 years old, I found a $20 dollar bill on the
floor of the local grocery store, while my dear mother was distracted
with shopping.
This was when $20 was basically the same as $100 or $200 in
today's terms.

I handed it to Mom and we proceeded to customer service desk to
turn it in.
The "lady" that had lost it was already there asking about
a lost $20 when we walked up.
My Mom dutifully turned it over to the obvious owner...
and the "lady" gave a perfunctory "thanks" and scurried away.

My mother was shocked...and spend some time explaining how
wrong-headed the reaction of the lady had been.

And this was in Bible-Belt Oklahoma in the 1960s.

So Japan ain't the only place it happens.

After that experience (and others during the intervening decades)...
I understand why we laud and even make some movies about people
doing the right thing.
When they could easily do the wrong thing.

Because we see too many counter-examples day-in and day-out.
