Only 17% of 8th Graders Can Read at Grade Level in Chicago Schools Overseen by Obama Education Secretary-Designee
Chicago Schools Chief Arne Duncan smiles as President-elect Barack Obama announces his selection to be Education Secretary, Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008, at the Dodge Renaissance Academy in Chicago.
(CNSNews.com) In 2007, only 17 percent of eighth graders tested at or above grade level in reading in Chicago Public Schools the school system administered by Arne Duncan since 2001.
President-elect Barack Obama on Tuesday tapped Duncan to become secretary of education in the upcoming administration.
Duncan, hailed by Obama as a reformer, said he would like to take the lessons he learned in Chicago with him when he moves to Washington. I'm also eager to apply some of the lessons we have learned here in Chicago to help school districts all across our country," Duncan said after Obama formally named him to the job in Chicago.
According to the U.S. Department of Educations National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) report for 2007, Chicago public schools have consistently performed below the national average during Duncans tenure.
The report measures students at the fourth and eighth grade levels in the subjects of reading, math, science, and writing, and ranks them at below basic, basic, proficient, or advanced levels.
Students in eighth grade are those most likely to have been in the Chicago system for a majority of Duncans tenure. CNSNews.com used the scores for these students to best determine the results of Duncans administration.
By 2007, only 17 percent of Chicago eighth graders were at or above grade level in reading. Thirteen percent scored at or above grade level in math. Twenty-three percent scored at or above grade level in writing.

How exciting. Obama is taking the lessons learned in Chicago and spreading them all over the country.
But,a 100% will become Democratic voters!
I heard this Education secretary appointee wants to start all homosexual high schools.
Yeh, but they know their Spanish...
Why worry??? I bet they are know how to put on & take off a condom properly!
But OTOH, Duncan has a good jump shot!
This is exactly what the left wants. It wants our children not able to understand or read so they can be controlled like the sheep they will become.
That no one stopped the nationalization of edcuation in the US is what has lead the charge towards socialism.
I don’t think there are any more stops now.
And Bush is doing all he can to destroy whatever remains of a free-market we had.
George W. Bush Republican Socialist.
They all have wonderful self esteem and know how to put a condom on a banana.
I think they fudged the numbers - it’s hard to believe Chicago is doing that well...
Meanwhile, and I’ll pull this stat out of my lower extremities, 83% of homeschoolers are reading ABOVE grade level.
And they know about "global warming" and that our founding fathers were "flawed". That's about it for liberal teachers - when you get past PC, there's not much.
I’m the wrong person to ask about that. However, considering that Ayers is a big-wig in the American Association of Educational Researchers and also ran millions of dollars through the Chicago school system, you have to know Bill and Arne are best buddies.
Imagine what the percentage would be if he wasn’t offering cash and prizes?
The education field gets more money and is considered a high priority only when they fail. If students cannot add, if students cannot read -- that's money in the bank, baby!
Public Schools are rewarded for turning out kids who cannot function. And I'm sure Arne Duncan is an expert in his field.
Good plan. Keep the voters stupid and maybe they will keep voting for crooks.
But he’s got a good jump shot.
Duncan has improved numbers in Chicago schools. That is true, and it is what Obama and others point to.
However, the improvement has been so slight, and in some schools, success has actually dropped.
It is hard to see why he is painted as some successful reformer, when the change has not been big.
All I can say is - never experiment with your children.
