Obama Picks Arne Duncan for Education Post
NY Times ^ | Sam Dillon

Posted on 12/15/2008 9:28:37 PM PST by conservativefromGa

resident-elect Barack Obama will name Arne Duncan, the superintendent of schools in Chicago, to be his Secretary of Education, a senior Democratic official and a second person close to the decision said.

Mr. Duncan is a Harvard graduate whose friendship with Mr. Obama began on the basketball court and flowered into frequent discussions of education policy.

He has seven years’ experience as chief executive of the Chicago Public Schools, the nation’s third-largest school district, where he has earned a solid reputation for confronting pressing issues in public education, like how to raise teacher quality, how to transform weak schools and when to shutter those that are irredeemably failing.

He made the schools so good that Hussein sent his own children to them. How could we go wrong?

Teachers unions will LOVE this choice!

Now maybe our public schools everywhere can produce the same excellence and quality of education that the Chicago school system produces. /s

This is an example of CHANGE--Hussein's new education policy,,,

NO CRONY LEFT BEHIND!

How does he fit into the pay-to-play scheme in Chicago town? This is fascinating to watch.

The Chicago public school system has a high school graduation rate of 52% (according to the Chicago Tribune).

I'm sure the SAT scores are just as impressive. /s

Not to worry, though--I'm sure the teachers' union has excelled in getting some of the highest pay rates in the nation.

This year, for the first time, parents of elementary pupils can see how their child performed compared to pupils around the country.

The 2006 Illinois Standards Achievement Test results include a pupil's "national percentile rank" for reading and math. In addition, 4th and 7th graders who took the state science test received a national ranking in that subject.

The rankings are based on multiple-choice questions from the national Stanford Achievement Test that were inserted into the revamped Illinois exams taken last spring.

A national percentile ranking of 50 is average. A higher number is above average; a lower number is below average. Top-performing pupils should see rankings much higher than 50.

About two-thirds of Illinois students received rankings above 50 in reading, math and science, according to a Tribune analysis. Chicago Public Schools students fared worse, with between 42 and 54 percent of students getting rankings above 50.

“... Chicago public school system has a high school graduation rate of 52%...”

LOL!! I’m sure this new cabinet member got his job based on this and other examples of outstanding performance, and not because of his politics ;-)

The guy was appointed by Daley. He has NEVER been a teacher. He played basketball for a living for 5 years in the minor leagues and Australia, and he believes in “bailouts” for students:

“CHICAGO, Sept. 11 (UPI) — Chicago education leaders say they are prepared to offer some 5,000 high school freshmen citywide cash for grades to improve students’ educational efforts.

Chicago Public Schools chief executive Arne Duncan said the “Green for Grade$” program will begin Thursday at 20 public high schools across the city and will offer lower-income students help in their studies and financial situation, the Chicago Tribune said.

“The majority of our students don’t come from families with a lot of economic wealth. I’m always trying to level the playing field,” Duncan said. “This is the kind of incentive that middle-class families have had for decades.”

The Chicago Sun-Times said the program, which originated at Harvard University’s Education Laboratory, will offer the freshmen $50 for an A, $35 for a B and C’s will earn them $20 a piece.”

Typical of “over educated” bozos - they “know” the concept of how things work — but they never seem to be able to get them to work...

Yet - they are known as “experts”.....and are attracted to “Public Service” like flies to shit — and rarely if ever are they held accountable for failure or lack of accomplishment....

I know they are trying to pay students for grades because they are dropping out left and right.
