Healthcare for illegal immigrants cost the Texas government and local hospital districts $678 million in a year, according to a new study that state lawmakers hope will show the federal government how much Texas is spending in uncompensated care for illegal immigrants.
The study, by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, estimates that $597 million of the total was spent by 94 public hospitals during fiscal 2005-06.
The remainder, about $81 million, went to the states contribution to emergency Medicaid, which pays for emergency medical care for things such as childbirth, and to the Texas Family Violence Program, which funds shelters, 24-hour hot lines, counseling and other related services. That figure is from fiscal 2006-07.
The figures are intended to lend support to future state requests for more federal funding to offset the costs.
All figures were estimates because of the limited information available. However, a bill proposed for the upcoming state legislative session would require agencies to report the cost of services provided to illegal immigrants.
Legislative reaction
The report, generated by the Houses 2007 appropriations bill, was criticized by a Fort Worth legislator as "immigrant bashing."
Rep. Lon Burnam, D-Fort Worth, said looking just at the cost of illegal immigrants doesnt take into account the money they pump into the state.

Oh don't I know it, but these people do nothing but take, take, take. There is no reciprocation.
We have an abundance of legal citizens of all colors who want/need and are actually entitled to our free medical care programs unlike the criminals who have broken the law and crossed the border into our sovereign country. I am especially opposed to the hordes of illegals who populate our ER waiting rooms for health issues that are in no way medical emergencies (colds, ear infections, headaches, etc., etc.) They bog down the triage system and actually cause delays in treatment to people who have real medical emergencies.
Engrpat, your story about the charity reminds me of something my brother told me this past year. He lives in one of those affluent suburbs north of Dallas and handles the collections for his Catholic parish. The church has a Spanish speaking Mass for all the illegals in the area. He said the collection plate at this service is always practically empty. Yet these Spanish speaking parishioners are the ones who expect and demand the church fund expensive services and programs IN SPANISH exclusively for them and their children.
You mean those idiots that spend their time and money doing it the right way?
What is a “road map to citizenship?” What does it mean when politicians talk of a rapid process when these people have no documentation, changing aliases, no SSN, change where they live, often shack up with others....... Even many of those that were involved in criminal activity here will slip right under the radar and be given citizenship. In the end our government will grant millions amnesty and disguise this act with terms like “road maps” or whatever else.
Like a firm that dumps toxins into a river costing millions in cleanup but saving in the disposal costs and padding their bottom line, the illegal is for large firms a low cost way to do business that rolls the true cost on the tax payer. When these people get sick and are in the emergency room, on the roads, in a prison or have their kids in a school we end up paying for it while firms like Pilgrims Pride walk away counting their cash.
When politicians speak about illegal immigrants they are speaking from both sides of their mouth.
So this is a Oxymoron statement if I ever saw one.
I have traveled to other countries.. if your illegal immigrant.. your illegal. You have no rights to services of the government. (Germany, Netherlands, Austria) Unless those governments extend benefits and back in the early 1990’s there was a HUGE debate about that..over Kurds who moved North out of Iraq.. got kicked out by Turkey and then spread out all over Europe.
But yet to your article here.. the Illegal Entrants who cross the border without a passport.. managed to get a job illegally are entitled to the drain on the taxpayers who 90% of the time have to pay their own way for the services these illegals get.
Thats not racist thinking..its theft of services by illegal entrants as you call them. God's people or not.. its ILLEGAL to allow this to happen.
“Rep. Lon Burnam, D-Fort Worth, said looking just at the cost of illegal immigrants doesnt take into account the money they pump into the state.”
How about taking into account the breaking of our laws?
Crooks.
If you sent all of the illegals in Texas back to Mexico, it would probably end up having the lowest population density in the U.S.
Yep, as long as the monied interests in Texas get cheap labor subsidized at taxpayer expense, the illegals will not go away. But hey, your produce and meat are a little cheaper.
Have you ever noticed the noose around her neck in that photo?
I wish it was.
Good post. Thanks!
Disgusting, huh?
sure. Be my guest.
All those phrases are used by Pro Illegal Newspapers in Arizona and Texas, or by pro Illegal politicians like John McCain.
I was mocking the article and 'them'.
My apologies then.
But this issue is getting WAYYYYYY out of hand.
It even spreads to the Pacific Northwest.. Here in Portland, the city runs a day labor center.. that its estimated that about 98% of the labor workers there are undocumented or illegal. The city dose not care.
All the supporters in this area are calling the people who are critical of the place.. Racist. Papers included. Its like the left wants to open the borders and start the fate of this nation to be determined by giving services to the illegals rather than its citizens.
That’s cool. This search engine is a little particular. (I’ve found)
