Pelosi: Senate Republicans "irresponsible"

Speaker Nancy Pelosi got the job done in the House on the bailout, and now she's pointing fingers at Senate Republicans.

Here's her statement, released around midnight:

"The House-passed bipartisan legislation protects taxpayers, preserves environmental standards and places tough accountability measures on the auto companies to help ensure their long term viability and competitiveness. The House-passed bill demanded deep concessions from all parties -- the executives, shareholders and the union.

“Senate Republicans’ refusal to support the bipartisan legislation passed by the House and negotiated in good faith with the White House, the Senate and the automakers is irresponsible, especially at a time of economic hardship. The consequences of the Senate Republicans’ failure to act could be devastating to our economy, detrimental to workers, and destructive to the American automobile industry unless the President immediately directs Secretary Paulson to explore other short-term financial assistance options, including TARP and those available to the Federal Reserve. That is the only viable option available at this time."

I have a feeling Pelosi will win this one because there are to many Liberals and Rino’s in Washington.

Right. The democratic congress passes their precious cafe standards increase for the first time since 1975 which makes it more expensive to design and build a car. Then they want the auto companies bailed out because they’re not able to compete. As you have sown, so shall ye reap, Nancy.

The republicans are correct in this. How do you pay back 15 Billion three month later, after its spent, and the autos file for bankruptcy?

Wake up Nancy, WAKE UP

Going to be an interesting day on Wall St today

It may not be all that bad. Without the bailout the little 3 may actually be forced to make the changes necessary to be competitive. The Pubs were actually crafting a pretty good bill, but the UAW didn't want to drop their members compensation to the same level as the non-UAW manufacturers.

Hopefully the mgmt of the little 3 will see the writing on the wall and file for bankruptcy before the new congress is in session.

If the CEOs did anything irresponsible,

it was not standing up to the Union Thugs that drove the American auto industry into the dirt.

The only difference between a viable car manufacturer in America and one that is failing - unions.

You DO know why the Dems can’t allow bankruptcy -

when the auto mfrs (that’s “manufacturers) take bankruptcy,

the union contracts are invalidated.

RINO Bush will fold again and 3-6 months down the road after all the ‘bailout money’ is gone, all three will file for bankrupcy and we will have lost our money.

Well, let us hope that these Auto companies are forced to do exactly that....to take the bankruptcy route.....and before Obama is sworn in to bail them out.

IMHO, the Republicans are blowing this big time. They're falling right into another dem trap.

The R's have already come out and said that the unions must make concessions thereby agreeing with the de facto bail out.

Well we all know the dems are going to come out and say that the Repubs don't care about workers and the "little" guy, sending them scrambling for cover once again

What they should be doing, is pointing out that there is a word for Government control of production, that word being FACSISM. That should resonate with most peoples, I would hope. Seems as though no one has the guts to call it what it is, no surprise there I guess.

But again, JMHO

LOL

Democrats abandoned the effort over UAW benefits that were non-negotiatiable. They demanded much higher benefits than profit making transplants paid for at taxpayer expense. That needs to be our main talking points.

Democrat talking points call in comments on CSPAN this morning:

1) Republicans hate unions (especially ones that want gold benefits from taxes for democrat contributions)
2) Republicans hate american workers (transplants only hire foreign workers LOL)
3) National security: GM won WWII for us. If Japan makes our military vehicles and we have WWII again who will make out military equipment? (So he says we need to be prepared if Japan attacks us agin.)

My view:
A pox on both their houses!

A)The UAW should have been evolving into a more modern union over the past 30 years.

B) The execs should have been planning for the future for the same period of time, at the very least they should have explored private equity markets before taking off in their private planes for DC.

“Why doesn’t Pelosi organize private money to bail out GM?”

This is a great idea! Look at all the money Obama has raised in his campaign. Surely a uniter like he could raise the money from private hands instead of forcing taxpayers into being stockholders.

This coming from a member of one of the most crooked families in MD. Maybe she can get some of the money that her family has stolen over the years and bail them out herself.

The names Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac keep popping in my mind everytime I think about this “bailout.”

As much as it pains me as a vet I must agree with the speaker..

The Senators voting against this are ignorant traitors. The worst sort of cess pool scum.

We are at war...HELLO? and we are losing this war in large part caused by the enemies within of both parties. I expected the Dims to to defeat us at home but not the Republican Party.

A nation that wants to win war does not give up its industrial base.

I'll be dammed if I will ever again vote for a Republican

I believe that the members of the House have to be sworn in with every new congress (every two years). If they bother to pay attention to their oath, they swear to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States.

Prey tell where in the Constitution does it say that Congress is authorized to meddle in this affair? Their meddling is one of the primary causes (EPA guidlines, Corporate Mileage Standards, "Green" cars, and legislation favoring the unions to give them an unfair advantage in collective bargaining) of the problem.

Pelosi is the one who is irresponsible....she's also a traitor!

There are private stock holders that already own the big-3. What happens to them?

Hey San Fran nan, look at the percentage of taxpayers who were OPPOSED to the other bailouts, before you open your trap about the blame game. The unions and Congress have ruined the American car companies.
