The 52-35 roll call by which opponents on Thursday prevented the Senate from considering a $14 billion emergency bailout passed by the House for U.S. automakers. On this vote, a "yes" vote was a vote to formally consider the House bill and a "no" vote was a vote to stop its progress. Supporters of the bailout needed 60 votes to advance it. Voting "yes" were 40 Democrats, 10 Republicans and 2 independents. Voting "no" were 4 Democrats and 31 Republicans.

Sweet. I e-mailed Chambliss and Isakson yesterday and asked them both to oppose. Thankfully they did. Absolutely the right call.
Reid voted no because a Senator must be on the prevailing side if they want to bring it up again.
The UAW brought this upon themselves....you reap what you sow. The negotiated contracts are filled with nonsense and there is no wonder the the Big 3 are having trouble being competitive. I have a cousin who didn’t work one hr over two yrs (an auto worker) and received full pay and benefits...He had to just show up at some location and sit around playing cards. Please, you negotiate nonsense like that into contracts and you can’e see why they are going down the crap shoot....
BTW, I also have on Long Island Cops earning with OT $175K a yr, Teachers earning $130K...all with full benefits...The unions are bleeding tax payers here dry.

It adds up if you add the money being paid to past retirees. The people working today DO NOT get over $70 in bennies and pay. The way the figure is used is a lie.
Don’t be cute. People are smart enough to know what the $78/hr means. Just because you have no problem with the government picking winners and losers in business doesn’t mean the rest of us have to follow.... Who is next for a bail-out? Having screwed up with TARP is NOT a good reason to throw more money at hopeless causes.
So if they just stop paying those pesky pensioners, they'll be able to turn a profit?
Bottom line - It costs the big three around $3000 more in labor costs to build a car of equivalent size, features, and quality as it does a non-union manufacturer in the US. That's why Toyota is making money and GM is not.
Only the big 3 can turn that around, and the only way to do so is through chapter 11. Otherwise, they'll be stuck with the same costs and obligations and will require monthly bailouts funded by the taxpayers. And I'm one of the taxpayers.
How about responding to the fact that GM and Toyota sell the same number of cars and while toyota MAKES billions, GM LOSES billions? How do you think that happens? And don;t say it’s because of executive pay.
A bit late! Had he voted against the original $700 billion debacle, he would probably be able to open his own "office of the President-Elect".

We can get plenty of non-UAW cars in southern states. “Producers” are people whose products and services actually sell
That’s what most teachers etc drive anyway. Go over to your local school and look at the teacher’s parking lot.
About 10-15 years ago, when the union contract expired at the local Firestone Plant the company said it needed a wage cut from $18/hr to $16/hr to remain competitive. The union said “no cuts” and walked out. The strike dragged on and the strike fund was exhausted. Thereafter the local rag paper did a sob story on the plight of a worker’s family that couldn’t make ends meet because the strike fund was exhausted and he could only find jobs paying $7/hr.
My first thought was that his skills were only worth $7/hr in the local economy, yet he and I both knew of an employer willing to pay him twice that amount. Yet he refused to take that job because of his union. It’s idiocy.
