WASHINGTON (AP) - Emergency aid for the nation's imperiled auto industry was thrown into jeopardy Wednesday, opposed by Republicans who were revolting against a hard-fought deal between Democrats and the Bush White House to speed $14 billion to ailing carmakers.
Democrats detailed the compromise measure and laid the groundwork for quick votes on it, holding out hope the bailout could be enacted by week's end. But a growing number of GOP senators declared they would not go along.
The White House, though not formally endorsing an agreement with congressional Democrats, dispatched administration officials to Capitol Hill to make a case for the rescue package. During a contentious, closed-door luncheon with Senate Republicans, they got an earful of criticism from the rank-and-file, some of whom have already announced plans to block the measure.
"They got a good dose," said opponent Tom Coburn, R-Okla., as he emerged from the session.
Even auto state Republicans who have pushed hard for a bailout said the measure needed work. Sen. Kit Bond, R-Mo., said he wanted to see changes. And Sen. George V. Voinovich, R-Ohio, said the measure didn't have the necessary Republican votes to pass Congress.
The Republicans' revolt came as the House began procedural votes on the package.

PRAISE THE LORD!
CHANGE HAS COME to the Republican Party!!
LOL!
If the Feds want to 'help' let them buy automobiles at MSRP. At least THAT would be Constitutional.
Whatever the number of vehicles is, buy that. 500,000, 750,000, or 1,000,000. If they can't get profitable after that, screw them.

This bailout needs to die ! Make sure if it going to be done it is done on the socialist democrats watch . GW needs to Veto it if it gets thru Congress.
Both GM and Toyota sold 9.3 million vehicles worldwide. GM lost 38.7 Billion in profit and Toyota made 15.91 Billion in profit.

Ditto that my friend.

Hopenchangey works for me too ...
Congressional Democrats say Congress will have to closely supervise the $multi-billion loans and details of the auto makers’ operations. Congress is incapable of supervising itself, and it has no authority under the Constitution to manage GM or the others.
Congress should simply not act, leaving the auto makers to whatever happens in the free marketplace. GM is already bankrupt in fact.
We have the future of the nation and the Constitution to worry about. Ignore Bush.
I’ll believe it when I see it.
Just say no to “American Leyland.”
Ah, but the moderate RINOs say - what about all the jobs? Won’t those union workers vote Democrat if we don’t pass the bailout?
News flash to RINOs: THEY’RE NOT VOTING REPUBLICAN NOW. THEY’RE NOT GOING TO VOTE REPUBLICAN EVER. Despite what some of them say, including some FR members who are also unionites, this last election should have *proved* beyond a shadow of a doubt that the unions are NEVER going to vote Republican. Let their company die and deprive the Dems of their *major* sources of funding.
I would have liked to have been a fly on that wall...
“Ill believe it when I see it.”
My prediction: A “small” ‘compromise’ bridge loan will be passed soon. The big bailout will be passed after the new Democrats have taken office in January. First we get the kabuki then the bukkake.
Its about freaking time that the GOP showed some balls. F McLame and Bush and all the RINOs and dems. The true conservatives have nothing to lose and everything to gain. If they dont start standing up for the constitution and the American people then there will be nothing left to stand for pretty soon.
Time to grab the ankles, conservatives. This is code words for sweetening the deal so the RINOs will vote for it. I'm telling you, Republicans are going to cross over and vote for this POS bill. I don't know why, they don't owe the auto companies and the unions NADA.
The socialists are going to destroy what is left of our country.
CRA hasn’t been repealed.
ACORN recieved 100 mil in the bailout, 4.5 % of every mortgage at Fannie and Freddie.
Now they want us to pay these people’s mortgages.
H*ll yes!
“Ill believe it when I see it”
Yes, But if and when they do, we, the Freeper Land Malitia need to support them in any way we can. We have to encourage this type of behavior. There has not been a lot of testtosterone shown in many long years. Let’s hope this is a start to return to conservative principles.
